poetic licence to focus on vinyl in this "record week" ---

all else being equal, are they better, and if so, why?

It is mixed IMHO. From my recent experience, I am not convinced. in fact I would steer clear of any 180G on classic records as I have not been impressed at all with a lot of dreadful pressings.

the best pressings i have bought by far are just ordinary weight releases from ECM records - always outstanding.

if you go for the audiophile 200G pressings from analogue productions/music matters, they are superb.

Speakers Corner & Pure Pleasure Records are great on the remastered audiophile front. Though now the audiophile re-issue guys are not the only people making 180g records most of my new vinyl is 180g and for me it just feels better having that heavy slab of vinyl on the deck and all of the new stuff I've bought sounds cracking. This new trend of 180g virgin vinyl has got to be better than the re-used vinyl that many 70's & 80's record were made from.

thanks Lontano -- that is my guess too, and i also wondered whether they messed up tracking force settings etc... but just played 180g "the music collection vol 1" and i dont think i detected any ill effects.
