CDS3 vs LP12
Posted by: Kevin-W on 18 March 2003
Any of you chaps who've been priveleged enough to hear a CDS3 had a chance to hear it up against a fully-rigged (ie Lingo 2, Ekos, Arkiva etc) LP12?
If so, how do they compare?
And is the CDS3 the best CD player you've ever heard? (and how does it compare to a CD12?).
All a bit academic of course since I can't afford an Ekos or a Lingo, let alone anything else (FWIW, I have an LP12/Valhalla/Cirkus/Ittok LVIII/K9), but I'd still be interested...

I think it's futile to get into this comparison lark.
I use a CDSII and an LP12; and enjoy them both for their different musical presentation.

Futile maybe but I would find it interesting and I suspect others would. One of the points of a forum like this, surely?
Obviously I am after reviews saying that a fully laden LP12 is the best as that is nearly what I have ( except Lingo 1 and now phono stage yet. But it sounds soooo good. )

I don't have a CDS3 yet, but the CDS2/XPS2 is ahead of my fully Naimed LP12 in terms of timing, flow and the 'way you get engaged to music'. The LP12 is slightly more ahead on, dare I say it, round earth things - clarity, space, etc, some records sound very real. The NAT01 on live broadcasts is pretty fantastic too. I liked the CDS2/XPS alot, but felt something was missing - the best way I can describe it is by saying that there is a residual "noise" - the XPS2 (and to an extent the new 250) bought a ease of listening that previously the analogue sources had. I am looking forward to the CDS3.

Does it matter which is best as long as the listener enjoys it. The CDS3 and the LP12 are different animals and will provide different listening experiences.
Surely all that matters is each source sounds as good as it can do?

I recently heard a full spec Linn LP12 (Lingo MK2/Linto/Ekos/Arkiva) it blew me away! Gonna have to sell my Lingo & Ittock now & upgrade. I do enjoy the CDS2/XPS2 (still need to buy one-my Micromega Solo is getting on a bit) but for me vinyl wins when played on a high spec deck.
Cheers

Chaps
Quite possibly futile, yes. And I know they "do" different things, but I'm still interested in what a state of the art digital front end can do against a state of the art analogue one (I'm sure many members of this forum will regard analogue, particularly as exemplified against the LP12, as the benchmark).
As Mike Lacey says, I bet a lot of other forum members would find it interesting, even if only for fun.

I prefer my P9 to my CDS2. It just times better (the P9 has the best PRat I've ever heard) and sounds livelier. I haven't bought a CD for a while and have taken to hanging around in charity shops, gnawing my anorak and looking for Art of Noise LPs.
