Goldfrapp

Just picked up Seventh Tree at Tesco, and it's outstanding (not Tesco, that is). I've always liked what she does, but this has moved forward, and I think this will become a favourite. Reminds me in parts of some old Beatles harmonies (which doesn't necessarily endear), and even if I can't find a mellotron on the sleeve notes, I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

FLOYD DICCUS!!
are you sure ?

I reserve my ire for later Floyd, I maybe should listen to some of the early Psychedelic stuff - but maybe not

It sounds rather like Kate Bush in places, to me. It's a good record, but one of those very loud compressed recordings, which is a shame. It sounds better in the car than on the stereo.

Nero,
Thanks for the reccommendation. I really like Felt Mountain and not so keen on Black Cherry. I will look forward to checking out the new one.

The new album is typical Goldfrapp. One or two standout tracks with the rest of the album filled with a load of average stuff. I'll buy a copy once it makes it to the bargain bin.

It's a good album.
I bought it the day it came out, and have probably played it every day since.
It's got a lovely mellow, 'organic' sound to it, closer to Felt Mountain than Black Cherry. In places it has the indecipherable, close-miked, intimate vocal style as heard on Maxinquaye and their debut. Brilliant.
So, my favourite Goldfrapp albums, with marks out of 10, are as follows...
Felt Mountain: 12
Seventh Tree: 8
Black Cherry: 6
Supernature: not got it, but I'm told it's about a 4.
Favourite tracks: Clowns (best song about breast implants I've heard all year); Happiness (psychedelic, man); Cologne Cerrone Houdini (nice bassline).
As for the sound quality, I think it's meant to sound kind of full and lush, which is why it's sort of 'loud', isn't it?

It is not typical Goldfrapp.
Have you heard it?
I've listened to the whole album and I own Felt Mountain and Supernature. I agree that the sound is not typical Goldfrapp but the content is. I think all of the Goldfrapp albums are a little bit of a one hit wonder experience.

Sorry to be a voice of dissent, but I am not at all keen on the album and really doubt that I will play it again anytime soon. For a while I was wondering if I had been sent the wrong album. I much prefer Supernature and Black Cherry.

So far i've only heard Felt Mountain and Black Cherry, i agree Felt Mountain sounds a bit like Kate Bush but only in the composition of the music which reminds me of Kate Bush 'The Dreaming' album in a few places.
Black Cherry reminds me of 'Madonna - Confessions on a dance floor' (even down the the cover design using red high-heel shoes) but it's not as energetic as this Madonna album, rather pleasantly dreamy instead.
I don't know which of these 2 Goldfrapp albums i prefer as yet, but i do like them both, neither of they have nasty over-compression so i will enjoy spending some more time with them after i catch up with some sleep - i'm far too tired to listen to any more music right now : (
Make a change for me sleeping in the night-time like wot normal people doze! : O [Yawn!]

Bought 7T today, and after a couple of listens am very happy with my purchase. Kate Bush? If Alison's channeling anyone it's Liz Fraser, I'd say, especially on Clowns.
I like all their albums, but though I do enjoy the glam on BC and SN I prefer the lusher sounds on FM and 7T. And the James Bond folks should really, really, really get in touch with Will & Alison to do their next theme.
Pete.

In some places the 'music' on Felt Mountain really does sound Kate Bush style especially on, The Dreaming.
I don't personally think Alison Goldfrapp sounds like anyone but herself! : )
I've not heard Seventh Tree yet, how do you find it for compression, Pete?

I popped it in the cd5i, pressed Play, sat back and enjoyed. The audio quality (or any lack thereof) didn't call any particular attention to itself, at least with my ears. I'm not saying they couldn't do better, but what you get doesn't get in the way of the music for me.

Risked it; £7.50 used from Playtrade
If it's like "Felt Mountain", but not "Supernature", I'll be happy.
Don't get me wrong; "Supernature" and "Black Cherry" are OK, but I love "Felt Mountain", and Kate Bush's "The dreaming" is my fave of hers
Nicely!

Dom - in case you don't know, a site like www. find-cd.co.uk will search for the best price for any given cd. Seventh Tree can be had for £6.99 new.
I only mention this to save you a few pounds; but because you'll be buying more, it'll end up costing you more - oh well!
Still getting continuous play here on Endor. It's no Felt Mountain, but it's got a similar sense of atmosphere.

I first heard Alison Goldfrapp's voice on the Peter Gabriel Ovo album. I like her delicate, breathy sound. Felt Mountain is very good for background music in the bedroom, if you get my drift. I wasn't so keen on Black Cherry, but quite like the new one. It does sound like early Pink Floyd in parts. It's also got that sixties film soundtrack feel which FM had.
I agree with an earlier poster that it has an organic, rich sound. Quite subtle.
