Great Service - Motoring

Dear Friends,

On Friday I had a slight grinding sound from the back axle (on my old Volvo 240) when I approached a round about and was forced to brake sharply. I knew this could only be worn out brake pads from past experience.

Saturday morning saw me on the phone to my garage, where the owner is exactly my age, and where my brother, me, and him used to play amoung the wrecks even forty years ago!

My diagnosis was considered reasonable, and I was asked if I needed the car for the weekend, which I did not. They were ready to do it at that instant. We agreed that a good slot would be Wednesday morning, and so I motored over only to be met with a worried expression as the pads were missing from the shelf! One quick phone call and half an hour later the Unipart van was there with the pieces. All told, an hour of my time, and a bill for £47. I know it is a simple job, but I think that shows how important it is to have a good long term reltionship with a garage, a builder,... and even gramophone dealer, perhaps. Things work well in those circumstances.

Good old fashioned service is not completely a thing of the past.

Strangely, it says something about the robustness of Volvo's engineering that though I managed to get metal to metal on a small part of the one pad, the disc was completely unmarked. I commented on this, and was told, "Swedish steel!" the horror stories I hear off people on times, taking a car to be serviced and then ripped off to the tune of a couple of hundred pound replacing discs, when the pads had not even worn out, says that some garages are more money than they are worth. The shame of it is that people pay and then go back. Long live the independant garage.

All the best from Fredrik

And another 'Long live the independant garage' from me'. Our service bill is only 30-40% of what it used to be since our switch from a dealers garage (Volvo).

When we still used the Volvo garage, you could count on a phonecall from the garage about 2 hours after you'd taken the car into service with "we have some bad news for you".....

Dear Peter,

Volvo garages are a mixed blessing. Lewis's of Ludlow are splendid as an official dealer, but I have received the brush from the ones in Worcester and Hereford, who I shall not name! When I had my previous 240, living then in Worcester I had a small oil leak at the front main bearing, and I wanted a new oil seal and cam-belt fitted. "About £700 for that sir!"

Though it meant going a fair way, same garage I mentioned above carried out the work for £150 including VAT! In Hereford I was told that there was a parts availbility problem on the model! I asked Partridge's, and was told not! Do these peole not want to service an old car? I suspect that they merely want to sell a new one or actually thenk they are being reasonable. I do know that Lewis's are very good from several familly members who run Volvos serviced and sold there.

Ditto. My wife's car is just out of warranty and she had it serviced for £120 at an independent instead of £280 from a main dealer. And they treated her like royalty.

Fredrik, you are right, there are some professions whereby you need to find the trustworthy ones. Plumbers and heating engineers also spring to mind. In fact any trade where it's easy to 'pull the wool over people's eyes'.

Dear Friends,

Funny how things work out. I made a long trip yesterday, and had to do my first emrgency stop for a few years only a couple of miles from home! I needed every inch left to me. A car infront stopped just round a blind bend (we were keeping station at a respectable distance at a steady 40 in good conditions) entirely without signaling. The brakes were just nicely bedded in and right at the top on the pedal. Yes the engineering and developement was rather fine on those old Volvos. If I had smashed him, I would have had a job to blame his non-signaling or his lunacy trying to instantly turn righ into a pub and being baulked by the oncoming traffic.
Phew! I bet his pants were a different colour after!

I bet your's were a different shade too, Fredrik.

About garages and main dealers.
A friend of mines bmw diesel is 6 months out of warrenty, but he continued to use the main dealer for servicing.
About a week ago, three weeks after a major service, the engine plays up, he takes it to them and they say one bank of cylinders have been starved of oil, that'll be 8 grand please for an engine rebuild!!

How could that be? with bmw's world class engineering.
He smells a rat, so do I.
Built in germany, serviced in England!

My own vauxhall, just out of warranty, was serviced by a main dealer, came back with 2ltrs too much oil in it.
That could have been an expensive repair had i not checked it.

I would NEVER take an out of warranty car to a main dealer.

In the UK car manufacturers are no longer allowed to insist in their warranties that their cars are serviced by their appointed dealers. So get it serviced wherever you want.

Not entirely so Mark. For new cars that is the case. For used cars bought under the manufacturer's used warranty (not the balance of the new) it's an insurance policy setup which stipulates where the car must be serviced. I have such a warranty and cannot go outside the dealer network. This is no hardship. The service is excellent and a lot less expensive that taking a Volvo to a main dealer - why do Volvo's cost so much to service at dealers?

Cheers

Harry,

I didn't realise that such a loop hole existed. One lives and learns!

I nearly fell through it Mark. It may vary with make. My used warranty is very good indeed and has paid for itself three years in a row. But it's actually an insurance policy and dealer servicing is mandatory. Had I bought new I could have taken it to the bloke down the road.

Oh and BTW nice part of the world you live in. I'm not far down on the outskirts of Frome.

Cheers

No, after lying derelict for quite a few years, Gravediggers has been demolished. Retirement homes are being built on its site.
