Happy Happy Joy Joy !!!! ( Done in your best Ren and Stimpy )

Well looks like my search is over.

Just struck a deal for a NAP160. It was fully serviced about 2 years ago. It also comes with the black snaic. Pick it up next week sometime.

So, sometime next week I will retire the Nait 1 in favour of a 72'd 32.5/160.

I have a couple of setup questions.

I currently have a Target 4 tier rack. I can't remember the series - About 5 years old - it has 4 Round Verticals with Square horizontals. Top shelf is spiked, bottom 3 are just corner support. Shelves are particle board. I was told to drill a small hole in the corner supports, then support the shelves on small ball-bearings. ( Bluetac'd if needed) Comments?

Next, I was wondering what order to stack the components in. Currently

Top Record Deck
2nd CD
3rd Tape and Tuner ( Stacked - I know ...bad )
4th Nait

I was thinking

Top Record Deck
2nd Preamp
3rd CD
4th Amp.
Floor Nak Tape
Wall Tuner

or should I swap 2 and 3, so CD on 2 and Pre on 3?

The Tape Deck will probably hit the floor, No other place for it. Hardwood ( suspended ) floors, any tips or tricks? - it only gets used "once in a blue moon" anyway.

The POS tuner I have will probably get put on a little wood shelf mounted on the wall. Will build this myself. It is mostly background sounds, Don't really do any serious listening with it. Ideas?

Thanks peoples.. big grin

My advice:

Top CD
2nd 32.5
3rd nak or empty
4th 160
wall or floor tuner

You can tweak the top shelf for best sound.

Good system, keep your eyes open for a used snaps2 or Hicap.

good listening.

Myke,

Sound like your rack is a Target B(eta) 4.

For the lower shelves I have some Partington 'toppers' a small cone that I've fixed to each corner brace. The original black, vinyl laminate, particle boards have been replaced with some MDF lacquered shelves (cut to size by local DIY store).

I use a B5 and here's the order of my kit, and the reasons why.

NAC112
CD5
Flatcap 2 / SNAPS
Tuner
NAP150

My LP12 / prefix sits on a wall bracket directly above this stand, if I put the CD5 on the top shelf the mains transformer for the CD5 induces hum, hence it needs to be further away.

There's no mains to the 112 so it's on top.

The Flatcap 2 / SNAPS is next as the Prefix lead won't allow it anywhere else.

Amp is on the bottom, purely 'cos it's heavy, and keeps cabling to speakers neater.

If you use ball bearings / cones the lower shelves will work just as well as the top one - the top spikes on the Target racks aren't very sharp.

I've also tried swapping the CD5 / 112 and even when not using LP still find the current layout works best - not sure why!

Andy.

I think I saw some MDF with a nice veneer at one of the lumber yards. That may be an idea, cut and stain em up, a coat or two of oil and done. Should look better than the cheap black that is in there now.

At this point I can't do a wall shelf for the table - rack is too far away, and I can't rearange it any different, or I loose sound quality. For the tuner, I can get away with a long lead, like I said its just backgound.

So Table will have to be on top.

My basic concern is which of the CD or Pre would be better off further from the amp. I understand the 32.5 can be quite microphonic so I was thinking further away, this and the better isolation using the cones / balls should help.
