Interconects for CD to pre
Posted by: James S on 01 December 2003
Finally getting my system together and was wondering what input you guys can give me on interconnects between my cd and pre-amp.
Set up will very soon be CD5(hi-capped), NAC202(hicapped and Napsc) and NAP200. Now I know the Naim interconnects from the CD5 are good enough but can I make any significant improvements through interconnects from the CD5?? (Speakers are Kef Reference, soon to be changed run on NAC A5 7m runs)
Help??

No,
Just use the stock interconnect and forget about it.
99% of people think that in all Naim systems the stock interconnects cannot be beaten.

Greeny is correct. Naim systems sound best with their own interconnects. If you want to hear improvements using wanky wires buy amps by another manufacturer such as Densen.
However, if you want a cable upgrade for your Naim try Townsend Isolda speaker cable.

Steve.

Steven is an advocate of this speaker wire, which I have never heard. But you will find 99% of people with Naim amps use NACA5. There is not a great swell of opinion for other speaker wires

I use Naca5 myself and I don't even have to cos my amps are Densen.
With all-Naim kit Naca5 is (obviously) very good. It is also very good with other amps and speakers.
Isolda is still much better though, much better.
I'll give you some perspective:
The system is CDX2/XPS2/202/200/Isolda cable/Ruark Prologue Twos.
It's like the balloon debate you may have taken part in at school; the balloon is fractionally too heavy and is about to crash to the earth destroying the above contents of which the electronics are perched precariously on a Quadaspire Reference table inside the basket. (There are also two runs of Naca5 spare inside the basket but they don't weigh enough to make a difference in overall balloon weight.)
Now you can lose the cables (£650 for 2 x 5m lengths) and the ballon will then float, or you can chuck the XPS2 over the side (£2300
)
I'd chuck the XPS2 before the Isolda.
Regards,
Steve.
PS: I tried Isolda in my system but it didn't agree with my room/speakers.

Isolda sounds like a great idea, but after recently spending more money than I ever have on upgrading my stereo (by some margin) I think I'll stick with the Naca5

There are enough variables in this game, just use the Naim cables and enjoy the music.

Hi James, I have just undertaken (because I could) sampling 6 or more "state of the art" interconnects, from £500 to £2000 (very well known high end cables persuaded by a certain magazine raving on about them) and guess what- basically they were all a complete and utter waste of money in my opinion, taken ALL the life out of the music. Naim/Chord know what they are doing, their cables really make the systems sing. I admire naim for not charging an extortionate amount of money for them.

That's what Chord Interconnect cables did in my rig. ( between CD player and a preamp)
I am staying with NBS Signature for now. To my surprise, varoius Chord cables I've tried were slower than NBS Sig. which are not particularly *fast* cables amongst others.

Surely the most sensible answer is to try some out for yourself. I always understood that Naim cables were unbeatable etc etc. But then I tried a Chord Cobra 2 and Nordost Red Dawn. The differences were very noticeable. Blind testing by myself and several others (all of them non "hifi" people) confirmed that the Cobra 2 and Red Dawn were significantly better. Vocals were much more focussed and higher, making the Naim interconnect sound relatively polite and too laid back/uninvolving.
Every system is different and one thing I've learnt from all of my various tweaking is to be less sceptical, give things a try and just use my ears.
