NAC52 with unity gain possible??

Posted by: Adrian F. on 13 May 2002

- It is most comfortable for AV2 use to have a dedicated unity gain input. So you don't have to fiddle around with 2 separate volume regulators when switching from stereo to av (and back!!! - autch)

- The 52 has a configurable input (besides the phono input) where you can fit a variable input board.

Could this help in av-use, or could naim make a unity gain input board for the 52?

I would be the first to have one, if it was technically possible...

happy listening

Adrian,

I'm afraid the boards you mention have nothing to do with bypassing the 52's volume control.

I don't believe unity gain is possible with the 52.

It's a standard feature in the 552. So,... upgrade! wink

I understand your point, I leave my 52 volume pot at 12 o'clock, my wife doesn't want to bother adjusting the volume each time she starts the TV. One of my fear is she plays a CD and forgot to lower the volume.

Unfortunately the variable board doesn't works.

Come on Naim, find us a way for 102,82,52.

It's also a standard feature in the NAIT5 so...
down-downgrade, and by the way, why bother with 2 volume control, buy a Technics AV receiver. Spend the extra $$$ for whisky, the effect is the same. big grin

Guys
We are currently looking into the possibility of offering this facility to existing owners of Nac 102,82 and 52. This would be for a dedicated input. I'll let you know in due course what we decide.

Doug, nice to hear that.

For normal listening it's no problem but if you want to listen at very low level it's not easy to preceisely adjust the volume.

For me this is only an issue with cd replay. But I still wonder why the preamps are designed with this very high gain on the line level inputs??

Looking forward to hear more about this. If the cost is insignificant then I for one would be interested.

I had an e-mail from Naim in which they say the unity gain upgrade for the 52 is finalised, but the procedure for doing it and the price are not! Watch this space, I guess!

Just want my Naim manufacturer to know that there are more of us interested in this ability to incorporate a unity gain option on slightly "older" Naim models.

Ken - the idea of the unity gain is to allow you to use and audio/video unit to patch into your usual stereo system but maintain a single volume control (on your audio/video unit). The current practice is to set your stereo system to some volume level, typically loud, each time you plan to use it in your AV system and risk forgetting to turn down the volume when you switch to some standard input (e.g. CD, Tuner).
