Bloody Tail GATERS
Posted by: wellyspyder on 11 July 2005
I am sick and tired of bloody tail gaters. Why do shitty drivers have to follow right up the bum? Gonna get there any faster? Like to kiss ass? Like to loose no claims? Like to loose dosh? Bloody idiots!

Claimed they were being careful!! Idiot and a nuisence too. Just cannot win. Price you pay for living in the smog eh!

There above is either a nice pro-low-speed-limit enforcement soundbite, or a display of crass ignorance of the (lack of danger) posed by exceeding a posted speed limit in any given context. Market forces would dictate that if I posed any real danger then my colleague who NEVER exceeds a speed limit would get more work than me.
The reality is he doesn't.
As for your "wide berth" request I can only promise you that I won't tailgate you, or overtake in inappropriate places if you happen to be dawdling along in the opposite direction.
I also promise to exceed a speed limit in order to complete the overtaking manoeuvre safely - so as not to run you off the road if you happen to be travelling in the opposite direction. (I have been literally run off the road by overtakers in the opposite direction who refuse to exceed the speed limit on the wrong (my) side of the road, even when they've misjudged the space in front of them when alongside the vehicle they intend to pass, and in the face of an on-coming vehicle. I also solemnly swear this won't happen to you if I'm coming towards you in the opposite direction.)
Speed kills!

quote:I seem to remember (but I may be wrong) that there is actually a minimum speed limit on UK motorways of 30mph. Fat lot of use that is.
I've driven along sections of German autobahns where the minimum speed limit is 90km/h but there is no maximum. Given that Germany is no.2 in the safety league for motorways in the EU, is that so dangerous?

Fear of being rammed up the arse by a Porsche doing 300km/hr concentrates the mind wonderfully when you decide to overtake a slow lorry in your old Polo. Perhaps german drivers are more sensible when it comes to keeping a safe distance behind the next vehicle? Though I can't see this is true based on the evidence of the many geman vehicles that use the danish motorways. Perhaps german police are just downright nasty?

Steve,
If you're going to quote me, please do so accurately.

Just like to add, going slightly off topic, that IMO the best thing the government could do to improve overall standards would be to ‘incentivise’ people to take the advanced driving test.
Why not just make the advanced test the STANDARD one - and keep off the road dickheads who shouldn't be behind the wheel in the first place.
Mandatory tests every two years for over 50s and every 1 year for over 60s seems like a good idea too.

Copy-paste not accurate enough?
Did this make all the difference? My interpretation was that it didn't. May a true word... and suchlike.

That would amount to bullying older drivers. If they get picked up by police officers for driving without due care etc. (i.e: driving like a snail) then maybe a spot test for reflexes would be in order as Brunstrom once suggested, except I wouldn't wish to fine the poor buggers for failing.

While on my morning ride today I was nearly wiped off the kerb on the opposite side of the road by a large Mercedes driven by an old git who overshot a corner! Last week I was nearly creamed by an old git sitting bolt upright in another Mercedes driving astride the double white lines on a long straight! Neither seemed remotely aware of my existence!

I'll take a guess that statistically, in terms of being directly involved in accidents, they are the safest drivers around....
....But they cause more than their fair share of accidents.
An old git driving a Daimler once moved to the middle of the road so as to straddle the centre white line as I was already alongside him trying to overtake him. (I wanted to do more than 35 in a 60.) My calculations of distance between me and the car towing the caravan coming in the opposite direction were quickly reconsidered - as I was now only inches from the farside kerb after avoiding being rammed by the old maniac. The overtake was quickly aborted.

HI,
Having re-read this bit re older people, I think we need to be a bit careful. To be stereotypical based on age could be quite insulting to some over a certain age, that are quite probably better drivers than some younger in age.
The assumption that older drivers are more likely to be poorer drivers is only as much of an assumption as that young drivers are all 'boy racers'.

And you have statistical evidence of this?
Insurance companies usually get their risk analysis right. Older drivers are safer. If anyone needs frequent re-testing it is the young - if you believe that re-testing would make any difference at all, that is.

As second vehicle in an ever-longer queue I followed an old bugger yesterday at 30mph for miles and miles and miles in and out of the villages on what passes for a narrow snaking main road along our south coast. There was a caravan pulled by an old van between the old fart and myself so it was impossible to overtake safely with the weight of oncoming traffic.
It would have been so nice to have got past, stopped the old bugger and taken his ignition keys. Then hurled them out into the nearest bløødy field!

Everyone should be subject. If you start discriminating against age it's the thin end. Not that retesting will ever happen.

Definition of old?
never been cut up by a young driver?

On a daily basis andy.
Young, old and middle-aged: There are more crap drivers than good ones.
You don't notice those who get on with the task in hand. I blieve it used to be called "driving". But I haven't seen much of it about lately.

There are "crap" drivers of all ages. Age is not an indicator of poor driving per se.
Poor drivers are possibly caused by poor teaching. If poor habits are allowed to pass then this is the result for all other better drivers.
I think forum members will agree driving at the appropriate speed is more important than driving too slow or too fast. Tailgating is just aggressive driving. Surprisingly, most tail gaters do not know when they are doing it. Became the norm!
I wish everyone safe driving, though not always enjoyable.
