Recommended J***: Eddie Costa - House of Blue Lights

Just discovered this LP. Eddie Costa's piano trio plays some standards (Funny Valentine, Diane, etc) but in an innovative, percussive manner. Stunning performances from 1959. Yet what struck me especially was the remarkable quality of the recording - simply outstanding.

Highly recommended (although my copy is a Japanese LP - certainly not digital and not boring). Don't know if it is available on CD.

If you like Costa's playing (he was awesome on both piano and vibes) try Shelly Manne "2,3,4" on Impulse--he plays on 3 selections and steals the record from even Coleman Hawkins. The whole record is superb. Costa was great, but another case of a jazz life cut short too early
