Latest Bowie remasters on CD

Posted by: Stevo on 26 January 2003

Now I have got all the early 90s ones with the extra tracks but, as some of them don't sound that great, I was wondering if any of you could recommend the latest batch of 24-bit remasters?

I'm not one for buying things I already have but, as they can be had for around £6 each now, I don't mind paying that for better versions of some of my favourite albums.

Worth a try?

All the best,

Stephen.

Where? 'Ziggy Stardust' was NINETEEN quid in HMV the other day.

Cheers,

Tim

In a word...........no

I recently got the remasters of Hunky, Man who, Alladin, Dogs and Ziggy having only previously had vinyl version of "changes" and cds of "best of 69-74" and "74-79". The sound of the "best of" cds is actually better than the remasters and neither a brilliant

I have 3 of the 24 bit remasters. Ziggy sounds pretty reasonable to me. Station to Station is OK. Hunky Dory really does sound awful.

OK I'm starting to get the picture now! Thanks for all the replies.

I think I'll be giving these ones a swerve. They'll be remastered and repackaged again before long anyway, I'm sure.

Tim: Ziggy is part of a "3 for £20" offer, along with a whole load of othe Bowie CDs, at my local HMV (Leadenhall Market London).

All the best,

Stephen.

If you have a turntable and you can find them, I can recommend the Ryko Analogue reissues which came out in the early 90s. They were all pressed on clear virgin vinyl and came with the same bonus tracks as you got on EMI's original reissues.
I have Aladdin Sane, Pinups, David Live, MWSTW and the Sound & Vision box set on vinyl and the sound is pretty good - very punchy (if occasionally a bit trebly) and nice silent surfaces.

Hope this helps

If you're on about the remasters that came out in 2000 on EMI, I've only owned (for a DAY) Hunky Dory, and took it back. It's flat, dull and boring... My prerecorded 8track copy eats it for breakfast and the green label RCA vinyl copy I have is, ahem, FAR FAR superior...

Man - even the original 1983 RCA CD issue I scored on Ebay sounds better musically than the abominable remaster...

And yeah, Bowie 1969-1974 on CD sounds better than the Hunky Dory remaster to me - I don't get it!

When the music's over turn out the lights
