Fashionable silver boxes

Posted by: Andrew Randle on 10 April 2001

Anyone else noticed the recent vast proliferation of silver boxes from UK companies - i.e. Linn, Exposure, Creek, Arcam and others.

Next we will be having wooden sleeves around our kit, which will be no bad thing!!!

....just look at the number of new cars out there that are silver (including mine).

If we have silver boxes my dad will be happy. Hes got a silver JVC system (~25 years old) which he says is better than anything on the market to-day.

Those bare wire connecters into his speakers look a bit suspect though ... especially as the cable looks like something he had left over from wiring his front door bell

Chaps

Contrary to comments made earlier in this thread, I regard silver boxes with wooden surrounds as tacky and vulgar.

Black is a pure colour and has an ageless sense of class about it. Silver, bronze and gold etc only induces a sense of fashion similar to the mid eighties when perfectly good kit was scrapped because it was sivler and black became cool.

The main point of Hifi equipment is that you should hear the music and forget about the equipment. That is impossible with garish silver and wooden boxes staring you in the face.

The thought of those hideous monstosities plonked on a pile of Mana beggers belief. That revolting sight, would be too awful, even for Vuk.

I strongly urge you to disregard this vulgar trend.

Regards

Mick......black is beautiful baby

Mick,

I agree about the silver bit, but disagree about the wooden sleeve bit. Those Creek tuners or Armstrong amplifiers looked well cool.

Alex,

...and then there's the DNM amplifiers with their smokey see-through acrylic cases. Nice.

Ever since discovering this forum (or its previous version), I have seldom read a contribution with which I found myself able to agree so completely. Thank you so much.

Unless you like MF. Now it's silver with platinum instead of silver with gold. Or blue lights with brushed aluminium lozenges instead of red lights with brushed aluminium lozenges.
