Big band swing...

Spurred on by the Sinatra thread, I was looking for recommendations re this genre -
I was brought by my grandparents who played Miller and Baisey etc to death, as well as Sinatra and the other rat pack co-horts.
I have some Glenn Miller, and some more modern stuff, but was looking for suggestions as to what else to investigate.

Stan Keaton .... or anything by his long time arranger Pete Rugolo.
Several years ago in an intimate venue, had the privilege of seeing Pete (in his 80's now) conduct an 18 piece ensemble doing his own arrangements - an evening of sublime music making.

Is that not 'Stan Kenton'? 'Kenton in Hifi' should be easily available, but it's a bit formal and forgettable.
I've a couple of really really cheap noname label Duke Ellington CDs. They're both really good recordings of really good playing. Try poking about in the local record shop. One of mine has '£2.99' still on it.... More formal Ellington big-band recordings are also worth investigating. I recently bought the complete 'Newport Jazz Festival', but this is probably more of a document than a simple listening experience.
And of course 'The Complete Atomic Basie' is a really good reissue (mono, FWIW).

Thank you, yes, of course, it is Kenton. My typo and poor proofing, my apologies.

Duke Ellington's big band music is hard, maybe impossible to beat. But for an experience of big band music at the outer limits of what's possible, try something by Sun Ra. In a more moderate vein, Gil Evans' big band arrangements are often sublime - "The Individualism of Gil Evans" is a great album.

Dozy,
which Basie cd's do you suggest?
