Female sixties singers?

Posted by: MichaelC on 04 October 2005

I need some help.

I have been left with a poseur of a question. Identifying the identity of a client's mother. She was a sixties female singer. She was very much of the London scene. The list of friends (all male so as not to compromise the question) includes various members of the Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton etc. She sold "hundreds of thousands, if not millions". So she must have been a reasonably well known recording artist. However, I am really lacking inspiration. Please throw some names into the mix so I can try and identify her.

Thanks

Mike

She's english, white, her true christian name is audrey, she was born in 1932.

I guess that rules out Lulu, Cilla and Marianne Faithful

Makes her kind of old for a sixties chick.

Dusty Springfield?

If it was definitely Audrey then it couldn't be Dusty as she was Mary O'Brien.

Other sixties singers (though not sure if any were known as Audrey) are Alma Cogan, Anita Harris, Anne Shelton, Billie Davis, Clodagh Rogers, Helen Shapiro, Jackie Trent, Julie Grant, Julie Rogers, Kathy Kirby, Lita Rosa, Louise Cordet, Marion Ryan, Mary Hopkin, Millie Small, Petula Clark, Ruby Murray, Sandy Shaw, Susan Maughan and, my favourite singer in the universe ever, Shirley Collins.

I don't suppose it was any of them - but it may help

Check the names on AMG they may have their "proper" names. It's not Alma Cogan although she was born in 1932.

Amazing! I tought I was pretty knowledgable about music and Pet Clark is the only name I recognize from ROTF's list.

Petula Clark was born is Surrey in 1932, but I think her name was always Petula.

Kathy Kirby looked like Debbie Harry's favourite aunt, and Clodagh Rogers was just plain gorgeous. Sandy Shaw was the stand out singer, with the exception of Dusty, who i don't think was into child baring.

There was a website called something like, Island of Lost Divas which featured a host of these ladies.

Excellent - thanks for this. I will do some cross checking with Allmusic.

This has been gnawing away for a little while. I may be getting closer.

Is she still alive? Audrey, not Clodagh

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stage_name is entertaining. Not helpful though.

I guess I must be showing my age by recognising most of them.

Not a contender because she is an aussie, and so slightly off topic, but does any one remember Patsy Anne Noble ?

Can't say I really do, but found this about her

She had a hit in 1963 with "Don't You Ever Change Your Mind" b/w "Sour Grapes." She was often on Juke Box Jury. She was in the musical Just for Fun.

She was in one episode of Danger Man - I'm not sure which episode though (can anybody help?).

As Trisha Noble, with her hair dyed blonde, she was on TV in Executive Suite (?) and Strike Force (?).

Later, she was in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.

I was exploring the search functions on Allmusic and have found that I can search by exact birth dates. And I have dob details! Only problem is that they are in my office and I have not been in since yesterday morning. Will look out details tomorrow.

I have LPs of several 60s female singers. Petula Clark, Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, and my favorite, Claudine Longet.

I like Claudine's A&M LPs (especially her 1st self titled LP) much more than her later LPs on Barnaby Records.

Many thanks for the information, i've never been able to find a reference to her subsequent career. Danger Man eh ? That was pretty good stuff for the time.

Oh no - the date of birth search on Allmusic drew a blank. I am now going to review individual biographies!
