Petites, or...?
Posted by: Andy Moore on 21 January 2004
After a bit of searching for new speakers (linn katan, atc smc7/12, rega ela) I've decided that I want Neat Petites. Or do I? I don't like the veneers much and am wondering if I would be better going all naim and looking at some intro2s.
Any useful comparisons?
My room is pretty small and the petites bass is about as much as I could handle. Are there any other speakers I've missed?

Petites rock way more than any other small speaker I've heard at that price or below...
An absolute bargain, and can be upgraded to floor-standers with the Gravitas bases.
Don't be put off - I managed to drive them well enough with a Nait 2, though obviously volume was limited.

Andy,
Another vote for the Neats, they work extremely well with Naim gear and will reward you greatly as you move up the Naim chain.
Its not worth looking else where the Neats are all you need.
Regards

Yep, Neat are the way to go. I no longer have my Neats but they were and are great speakers without question. And, of course, Bob & Derek represent all that is good about the UK hifi industry - they're helpful, friendly and produce great kit and great prices. What more can one ask for?
Neat speakers are excellent, and Neat themselves are a wonderful firm to purchase from.
John (Bob S., just send the cheque as per usual

I recently decided to downgrade my active DBLs (1 x 500 and 2 x 300s) and purchased a pair of Ultimatum MF7s to be driven by the 500 I retained. After only a few bars of music, I realized that it wasn't a downgrade at all, but in fact was an upgrade in every way.

Adam,
They are sounding rather good right now!

Intro 2s - NO. Dry and rasping IMO.
Start by demoing Neats then see where that takes you!

Where have the Ultimatum owners placed their speakers in the listening room?
Posted on: 25 January 2004 by gordon cavanaugh
Hi Evan,
Not the best picture, but have a look here:
[URL=http://www.regausa.com/board/showthread.php?s=&threadid=210&highlight=gordon]
The speakers are about 15" from the back wall, 24" from the left wall, and 3' from the
right wall (there a hallway of sorts on the right.) The room is about 14' by 16'. That's
a staircase behind the 2 fools in the picture (okay, may be 1 fool)

Thanks for the replies guys. I have been playing around with the placment of my MF7s and am finding that they sound really good just about wherever I put them. Have either of you tried toeing them in at all? If so, what was your experience? I'm actually thinking of trying them on either side of a room corner and have them fire down the longest distance in my room (corner to corner). This type of placement should also breakup standing waves. What do you think?

Brian,
Can't hardly wait.
Evan,
Mine are slightly toed in, 10 degrees perhaps. I haven't played with placement, other than moving them a couple inches further into the room. I can't say that made any difference, so I just left them where they are. My room is such that I really have no other placement options.

Heartily recommended. The only slight caveat is that whilst they are driven pretty well by smaller amps, they really fly with the bigger amps. What are you running?
Alex, I'm using a 112/150 pre-power and of course Naca5. So I have enough power for my needs.
Does anyone have a photos of petites (or other neats) in finishes other than orange (I mean 'cherry')? Any ideas how much extra for real cherry or maple veneers?
Regards
Andy

Andy,
The wood on Petites is real veneer. The cherry is actually quite nice, and darkens a bit with age.

I have placed mine against the back wall. They are moved out by about a foot. They are angled in by about 30 degree's and they are about six foot appart.
The rear of the speaker has been cleverly raised by about an inch to an inch and a half angling the tops of the speaker towards the listener. This ebables more treble from the super tweeter on the top of the speaker to come into the room.
Overall it works extremely well.
