Naim NACA 5 in non naim system

Posted by: raymond on 23 November 2002

Hello to all, I am at present using a 42.5 alongside an american power-amp which is a Dunlap-Clarke Dreadnaught. Am I right in thinking that the Naca5 is only suited to Naim power amplifiers? I am using cable talk 3.1 at the moment, would changing to Naca4 or 5 bring improvements? My loudspeakers are Linn Isobariks.
Thanks Raymond.

I put Nac A5 on a Sim Audio W5 power amp once...It worked way better the the JPS cables that were on it before....which by the way was the end of the Sim gear , you see you start with the wire and the rest of the Naim gear soon follows.............

Stick with the cable talk cable. I have used this with Naim amplifiers with good effect.

I know Naim recommend Naca 5 but I think it stiffles the sound. I swithced from cable talk to Naca 5 to comply with Naim's principles but I feel I lost something in doing so.

I am tempted to change my Naca 5 to either Chord or cable talk to regain what I lost.

Naca5 was my first bit of Naim with my old Rotel amps.

Followed by my Densen amps.

I don't use Naim amps.

No other cable turns on the musical emotion like Naca5. It plays the tune with more precision and insistence, and has a fast, driving, elastic, tuneful bass like no other cable I've tried.

Unlike users of Naim amps, I am free to use any cable, and yet I still use Naca5 - one of h-fi's greatest bargains.

Regards,

Steve.

Hmm, that's weird... I tried many cables (that I had lying around in my closet) and there was only one cable that didn't suit my Naim amp.
It's... the Cable talk 3.1! As soon as I plug cable talk 3.1 cable into my naim amp, it distorts like hell, as if the amp is getting electrocuted, and the Naim logo lights up to the rythm of the music. Quite spooky I can say!

So am I! I use a Nait-2 and have tried many different cables, from Van den Hul to Transparent and from Nac-a5 to some cheap homebrew cable from my dealer.
I must say it's quite a failior of Naim to make their amps 'only' suitable for the ultra stiff naca5. (imho)
At this very moment I use (and prefer!) a thin, flexible and cheap homebrew cable from Rinsma HiFi. (a former Naim dealer, and probably the only classic flat-earth dealer in Holland)

I also used Kimber and the most afforable Transparent cable to very good results.
Sure, the Naca5 is a great cable, but imho not better than the ones mentioned above (and worse than the one I use now!) and it's just too stiff too handle.
If Naca-5 REALLY was the only suitable cable for my Nait, I would go for a different amp!

As long as my ears tell me it sounds good, ...it IS good.

Greetings,
Alco

There must be someting wrong!!

I used Cable Talk 3.1 for many years and I was completely satisfied with what I was hearing.

I only changed to Naca 5 on the recomendations of the Naim forum. I believe my system lost some of its clarity and depth of sound when I changed.

Perhaps I am missing the point somewhere but all I can say is what my ears hear.

Hmm, you might be right NB.
I did some thinking, the Nait-2 I now have is not the same one I used when trying the Cabletalk 3.1 cable.
So, maybe my previous Nait (oldstyle) was to blame.
I'm tempted to give my 3.1 leftover another try.

was'nt impressed with Naim cable, chose Chord Rumour, works well with my Nait 5 and other gear which is non Naim

Chord Rumour wrecks timing and notes become muddled as they run into each other.

Bye bye tune!

Chord Odyssey does it better, but Naca5 does it better still.

All imho of course!

Steve.

Give it a go, what have you got to lose? If it isn't as good as your current cable you can always change it back again.

You're right NB!
I just took my left over Cabletak 3.1 out of the closet, connected some left-over goldplated babana's and hooked it up to my Nait-2.
I must say the Cabletalk 3.1 looks and feels a bit like Naim's naca-5 too. (the Cabletalk is more flexible though)

Well, all I can say is that the first time I tried the 3.1 cable (on my previous Nait-2) the Nait was to blame and not the Cabletalk!!!
I don't know what was wrong with my previous Nait, but this time it sounds superb!
(slightly different then the ultra thin, Rinsma cable I use at the moment, but not really better or worse)
I must say I only listened/compared for about 15 minutes though.
{to the beautiful and very well recorded new (live!) album of Alison Krauss)

track 9,10 and 11 of disc two
