More power in a Nait 5 sistem
Posted by: Topof on 07 May 2003
Hi folks,
is there any way of getting more power in a CD5, Nait 5 sistem or will I have to go the pre-power route?
A lot of people talk about Hicap/Flatcap, but am I right in thinking that these are power supplies which improve the sound quality of the connected components.
Thanks
Dave

Dave,
You could use the Nait 5 as a pre-amp and add a power amp, say a 150.
This would provide more power but you cannot really beat a good pre/power set up.

Dave,
As mentioned a good pre-power, e.g. 112/150 is a BIG improvement.
Having said that adding a second hand hicap is probably a very effective way of getting a big sound improvement. Bear in mind that Naim equipment seems to benefit more sonically from improvements to pre-amps than to power amps.

Hello Dave,
I have a CD5 and Nait 5. I had them for just over a year, when i added a Fltcap2. I found that this made a big difference, the music was much more detailed and lively, and i have really thought that it was a good step forward. I wouldn't say that it gave more "power" though. I have enjoyed this for a good year and a half, but now i'm also thinking of more power, and therefore also now looking to do this with a pre / power arrangement.

Folks
Can I do an integrated upgrade? I.e., can I put an external ps on the pre-amp section of a Nait 5 and still use it as an integrated?

With Naim amps/preamps, adding a PSU is like upgrading the preamp and amp at the same time - the frequency extremes are more audible, dynamic congestion is reduced, and musical coherence is increased.
I think a hicap or faltcap 2 is in order.
If you want to go the separate route, doesn't it make more financial sense to sell the Nait and buy a used 112 plus a new or used amp (because the Nait has a higher market value than a used 112)? Unless you want 2 sistems....
Regards.
Phil - who often disagrees with Tuan on the subject of amp power...YMMV
