What's going on?

You won't see many of these, gracing Fraim.
It's a Sony SCDXE 670 SACD player. David Vivian tickled my fancy with his 'High End For Peanuts' review in the September Hi-Fi Choice.
It's £120. I'll say that again: One hundred and twenty pounds. It comes with £40's worth of 2 SACD 'sampler' discs as well.
The drawer and operation is silky smooth, you can turn off the display and it sounds unbelievable.
My CDS II IS better; but................ (see the title).
Get 'em while you can boys. I had Mr Richer's last one at my local branch.

Having only just read all of this thread, looks like we have the following results overall to date:
1. As a CD player, the 670 is just like any other budget CD player. i.e. does a good job for the money, but gets pasted in the end.
2. There's not too many comments on how good it is with SACD, I think I counted only 2. Seems to be that it's very "natural" but not too involving.
From a bunch of recent dems I've been involved in which have helped me decide to purchase a CD5 over the competition, the key thing I noted is that the main difference is the "sonic signature" that the CD5 gives.
Now I'm assuming that the 670 has nothing at all like the same kind of "style of presentation", please correct me if I'm wrong on this.
Can someone please try to describe just how a 670 comes across? I get the impression it's not pacy, full of PRat etc.
Thoughts, or experiences?

I'd give it a go. Based in Reading but get up the the smoke on occasion.
No point in being Luddite about this; by virtue of being Forum members we are music/sound lovers; if SACD is a way forwards we should at least check it out. For £130 or so, its daft not to listen.

John N,
tell us about your new amp.
PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am looking forward to an invite to listen to it.
I will bring over a pair of my own design of loudspeakers so as to have a listen on speakers i know well.
I recently stuck them onto the end of a CDS11 52 500 fraim and power supplies.
Utterly amazing sound from them on the end of that lot.
It was a blast.
regards David

I think the new amp needs a new topic/thread.
I want to get a decent photo to go with it.
Watch this space.

SACD VS CDR
When you take a look at the specs for an SACD, it supposes to have the capability to reproduce the music in six channels, just like a movie in DVD format.
Personnally, I have tried a SACD (Sony 900)pluged on my Naim equipment vs a CDX and I was not impressed at all. Different sound but not really better.
Then I have plug the same SACD to my Home Theater System to take advantage of the six channels. I was listening to Ya Ya's Out of the Rolling Stones remastered in SACD format. The sound was terrific and you have really the impression of being there in the middle of the audience.
After that I have tried other SACD (studio version) on my Home Theater again and I would say that I'd rather like to hear it on my Naim. It sounds like the Quadrophenia type of sound, where the guitar is on the left, bass on the right, drums on the Sub, backing vocals on the back,.... Strange impression..far from a stereo effect..
Personnally I think that the SACD will take a huge step the day they will be able to offer the image in addition to the sound. Then for each song, you will have the clip on the TV screen and the SACD will be pluged on the Home Theater.

I haven't read the whole thread but I noticed someone asking about the SCD-1. ie if this cheap thing is so good, then how good is the top of the range SCD-1???
Well, we tried it in the shop. We tried and tried and tried but we couldn't get a decent sound out of it for CDs. SACDs sounded quite confused too, but that's a different medium and perhaps it's meant to sound like that - not sure.
Now, we tried it because a customer wanted to hear it against other stuff. He thought it was fantastic! So much so that he bought one. We thought it was worse (musically) than a TEAC mid-fi CD player we stock (£300) - and we told him so. But hey, he liked it. He's got one at home now and loves it to bits. Go figure.
Regards,
Frank.
