Can anyone help with an Isobarik problem, intermittent loss of mid and treble

Posted by: naimtheday on 23 May 2002

I have a pair of 1984/5 Isos which had new mid and trebles by Linn about 8/10 years ago. The cone domes (dust covers are pushed in (but noone knows who did it 'cos they know I'd kill them!)). Sometimes there is no mid and upper detail, sometimes there is a bit of buzz and sometimes I am almost convinced that they work. I really can't face scrapping them as when they worked properly they were sooo musical.
I wonder if it is a dry joint or other internal connection problem but I don't know how to get into them to find out.
Any ideas anyone? confused

Try a recording of solo piano. Turn the volume up, do you get a buzz? Isobariks don't deal with heat build up very well and it could be that the voice coil on the mid-range drive unit(s) have expanded and is rubbing. If this is the case you can take the offending drive unit out and rotate it by 180 degrees - it might slove the problem. Otherwise you might need a new bass driver. If that isn't the case you need to isolate the driver that is rattling and replace it. Tweeters tend to fall off in performance over time, bass/mid units either work or don't.

Hope this helps.
