Steely Dan

I'm a bit of a 'Dan' freak and have the 4 CD set; 'Citizen' which is excellent.

However; a friend played me the recently released double compilation 'Show Biz Kids'. The bongo introduction is back on the start of 'Rikki' and the recorded quality is a whole lot better than 'Citizen'.

Get a USA copy, for best sound quality.

Before someone says:

"Where's your ears at boy"?

I've just had a basin full of the Dan and it's a vibraphone on the intro to 'Rikki'.

Useless trivia dept:

The song is about Rick Derringer, who had previously played on Dan albums. Becker and Fagen are having a swipe at him for playing 'on the side' for another band.

Now you know.

The instrument used in the intro was a Flopanda and the song was about a girl student called Rikki who they both new at Bard College.

Further trivia - During the recording of Pretzel Logic they used Magnaplaners as studio monitors.

Can't buy a thrill

and

Countdown to ecstacy.

Both fine, musically timeless albums with trademark enigmatic lyrics.

Is 'King of the world' about the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust?
