TVs and speakers

Hi all

I read somewhere that you shouldn't place your TV too close to the speakers.

Is this true? Why? How close is too close?

if your speakers are not shielded (most Naim speakers arn't) the large magnets in the speakers will affect the TV picture, you can see the effect if you put a speaker near the screen.

Depending on the speaker approx 2 feet gap at each side is probably about enough. All speaketrs designed as centre speakers will be magnetic shielded so can be placed directly above or below the screen.

Many recent speakers are also shielded (especially those typical in HC instalations) in this case you can have them as close as you like.

Greeny,

So just the odd degauss should do it then...

TV between your speakers will affect the sound stage. Make a simple test with and without the TV.

Putting a TV inbetween the speakers will not affect the sound of your speaker if they are more than 35cm away from your TV.

Alex,

be careful! Even at 1m the sound will be different with and without a big TV.

Giving advices requires experience.

One word of warning placing non shielded LS too close to a CRT will sometimes distort the shadow mask which makes it unusable, I personally have never seen an aperture grill affected but have heard of such cases.

I have experienced the situation where I noticed no effect of the TV from the speaker magnets until after I removed the speakers at which time I ended up with the top corners of the screen with bad colour distortion. This was only fixed by replacing the speakers in the short run but gradually disappeared over time after they were removed.

I now have shielded speakers but the TV is still between them (about 600mm clearance). Having the TV forward so that its front is level with the speaker baffles really stuffs up the sound however, so the TV is now pushed back with its front level with the back of the speakers and this works well.

My center speaker is the Rega centa. It has been sitting on top of the TV for at least a year without any side effects so I am sure it is properly shielded.

My TV stand is almost as high as the briks. If I place it near the briks there will only be a few inches gap between the stand and the briks but close to a foot between the tweets&midrange and the TV. The woofers will be at least 2 feet away.

I think my TV has a degauss button in the menu, I'll check that again.

Has anyone compared the Centa to the Axess? I got the Centa to match the ELAs. It is very clear but if a used AV2 ever finds my way I may need to look for something else.

cheers
