Upgrades for 2003...?

Posted by: silklee on 29 December 2002

Let me start off......

Present setup
CD5 / Rega P25 / 92R / 90 / ES14

all on Particular Novus

Next up, I would like to get a pair of naim speakers which the 90 can drive and it seems to point to the intros.

Silklee !

I am a proud owner of 45 days old CD5 and Intros 2. Intros are very very good speakers and relatively easy to drive. I drive them with Nait2, but as I see you have some watts more and that would be even better.
I was upgrade from Epos12 and just can't believe what a diference is that.
When you get them, take some time and patience to install and place them well. It is very important to not toeing them. They need to stand parallel with back and front wall and only in that position they will recreate a real sonic picture.
Don't forget for burning in. When you install Intros they will probably make some unwanted "woouuoomm" on some recordings followed by some kind of confused sound, but that would be disappear after burning in.
Even after 45 days, I definitelly hear how they comming better and better.
For that money and with electronics you got, you simply can't get any better speaker.

Good luck.

My priorities are:

  • Get the knackered 250 into an at least slightly better state
  • Get decent equipment supports
  • Improve mains
  • In case funds are available: improve cabling and get a decent source

Cheers,

Well, I have recently bought a Creaktiv support, so that's sorted out. My (only) goal for 2003 is to get some very good speakers, as it seems now a pair of Vienna Acoustics Beethoven or Sonus Faber Grand Piano's. Both of these sounded so great with some decent rock music powered by just a HiCapped Nait 5. I can hardly wait...

The best to all!

I've just sold my CD3.5 so am on the lookout for a CDX. I also need to replace my very old cart on the Gyrodec, and may get the uprated PSU for it too.

On the 'bog standard' front, I'm going for a Freeview box (the Pioneer one is supposed to be one of the best, any ideas?) and need to get a few bits and bobs for the Canon digital camera I got for Xmas. Isn't the wife a peach...

Perhaps my budget can squeeze out a better pair of speakers to go with my 250 than the current Keilidhs (to be moved to the second system).

So don't hesitate, Bas, to post what your final decision turns out like.

Akiva; Supercap; Lingo 2.

Akiva a must as a) my Arkiv is knackered and b) it is a monster improvement; Supercap ( 2nd hand ) in order to be ready for a 52 as they trickle down the Food Chain; Lingo 2 because it also makes a mighty difference and the Lingo 1 seems to get reasonably good prices on the 2nd hand market.

Fraim possibly after that.

I still do the Lottery.

Herman, you should definitely have a listen to the Vienna Acoustics. They give so much infomation, more than I have ever heard coming out of a Naim system. You'll love 'em!

Hello Mike

Have read your review on the Akiva. Great!!!

For how many hours did you play your Arkiv? I think mine is also going downhill. I think it has between 2000 and 3000 hours. How can you tell that it's gone?

The intros are excellent speakers for the money. Also the ES14s can be hard to drive (designed with a 250 after all). So if you're having drive problems, an easier load such as the Intro would definitely be a good option.

However, this is only true if the 90 is running out of steam and distortion is a problem. If it's not, then I would consider a Flatcap 2 to drive the 92 and CD5. Musically this would be a big benefit and it gives the 90 a bit more juice to drive the speakers (if not anything like a 250).

Frank.

Possible upgrades...

A 2nd hicap for my 82/Hicap/250 (most likely)
A good rack to replace my current Micheal Green's clamparack (could be)
A speaker to replace the Epos14??? (unlikely but still possible)

Priorities this year:

1. Get the LP12 serviced, and replace my K9 with a better cartridge (I was thinking of auditioning the Adikt or a Dynavector MC but I'm always open to other suggestions)

2. Get my 62 re-capped (while on holiday)

If I had some sense my upgrades for 2003 would be:
none

But, as I don't, they are quite likely to be:

1) Sell CDX head unit and replace with CDS2
2) Hutter Rack

I'm a bit nervous that by getting in a CDS2 I'm going to feel the need to swap the 102... Eek

I have a boom problem with my speakers (ES14) in my present room. I dont know whether the intro will be for the better or worse.
There was no such problem in my previous room.

Silklee,

Have you tried borrowing a pair of Intro's from your local dealer an d seeing if you have a boom problem with the intro's?

The ES14's do produce a lot of bass for the size of the speaker, whereas the Intro's have a leaner more tuneful bass.

I think having my NAT-01 re-capped will be about the long and the short of it for this year.

I want to move house at some point and the wife is looking for a new job. Lets hope something comes along soon so we can get some new racks Smile

2003 will see my first upgrade in 10 years or so.

Current System
Roksan Xerxes (1987) / Artemiz / AT95e / NAD 3020A / Heybrook HB1s.

Xerxes will get it's first service since 1988(!) and will hopefully be joined by a DV XX-2 in a month or two - closely followed by a 72/90 or 140 and maybe a HiCap - if I can stretch to it... that should do for a while.

I'll almost certainly be downgrading by selling my Rega Super Elys, 102/90 and Kans. Eventually, I expect to replace them with a Linn Adikt, an s/h integrated amp and an appropriate pair of headphones - the latter because I'm sick of the absurd furniture distribution between my two rooms that providing a suitable habitat for my speakers necessitates.

Then next stop a Lingo II - most unlikely to be this year, though...

Definitely replace my Linn Kan 2's. Having heard a pair of Royd RR2's the Kans just aren't doing it for me anymore. Better speakers are needed to do justice to the rest of my system.

Anyone know anything about the Royd Abbots?

You bad boy!!

The Xerxes needs servicing at least once a year!! You will notice a big difference when you do get it serviced.

The Xerxes works extremely well with Naim amps.

Havent got round to asking my local dealer for a home trial. I would most probably approach my dealer once i am ready to upgrade.

But the Sonus Faber speakers are also very seductive, mainly because of their looks. And now it seems they have bookshelf version of the cremona.

Silklee,

I have read the review in HI fi news on the new sonus faber's and if they are half as good as the reviewer suggest then I would have to agree with you.

I have heard a pair of Sonus Fabers years ago and they were very good. I would have to say better than the Epos's and Intro's. Strange though I bought a pair of Ruarks instead.

Aim for 2003 I must go and listen to the new Sonus fabers myself.

NB,
If i do manage to give the Sonus Fabers an audition, hopefully driven by my NAP90, I will drop you a note of what I think of them.

We can then compare notes. Smile

NB,
It's true, I have neglected my Xerxes over the years - It still sings though, looking forward to some big improvements.

BTW The Dynavector may seem like a rather extreme move (as I have previously been talking in the £200 ballpark) but after scanning the Forum's cartridge recommendations I decided to try a DV 17D2 Mk2. However a friend of mine is visiting Singapore in the next few months and hopefully will be able to pick up an XX-2 for a similar price.
A Naim amp will certainly be a necessity at that point - there are some really good deals around on the Olive kit so it shouldn't be too difficult to find something to complement the new front end.

I just have to say that the Naim forum has been a goldmine of information - I have had many questions to ask over the last couple of months regarding various upgrade decisions.
The Search facility on the forum has enabled me to find those answers without the need to duplicate previous threads.

Unfortunately, with little experience of Naim's equipment over the last 10 years or so I really don't have too much to contribute, but I am regularly logged in and read all your posts with a great deal of interest and enjoyment.

Thanks everyone for such an invaluable service.
