Just dug this out on vinyl. Absolutely fabulous - up against a lot of good stuff from that time such as The Smiths; The Cure; The Specials second LP too. Not saying the best - but great nonetheless.

I can just about remember Oblivious, but a much bigger tune played at least a couple of times at my school disco that year was Herbie Hancock's Rockit - a sick video for an awesome track.
I don't remember anyone attempting to spin on their head though.

Take 'Patience' off and it is a very good album.
Have 'High Land, Hard Rain', damn those electronic drums.

I always preferred 'Walk Out to Winter'. The early 80s was a great time for music. Whether the music per se was wonderful, or whether it was because I was at uni doing my PhD I don't know. Probably a bit of both. The first Smiths album has to be the best of the lot.

I was hoping the Troy Tate Tapes would get an official release with the latest supposed complete Smiths package.
Of the 'studio' albums, I think 'Meat Is Murder' is the best album as a whole. The first album has a special place because of the 'new'.
I can't narrow down to one song. The time for me was the end of The Jam, who had led me to Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, James Brown, Motown, Small Faces, Kinks ..., and hearing The Smiths, in turn learning of John Peel's and surrounding shows.
Cheers,

I saw Roddy have his 'nervous breakdown' in Buxton when he left the stage and then announced on his website he wouldn't be performing for a while. Apart from backing his mate Edwyn Collins' tour I don't think he has.
