Since I'm in the market for a iPod touch, I wonder if Apple is to release a smaller iPad soon??

I'm not familiar with Apple products that well, but I guess a new iPad release will take some time (since the current model is just recently released). Looking on the bright sight, a new (smaller) iPad should support Wifi Direct (fingers crossed it has a more efficient energy consumption)
Some background information: the Wifi Alliance is getting ready to unveil Wi-Fi Direct in the weeks ahead. It's a new standard that will allow devices like cameras, cell phones and computers to talk to each other without needing to connect to a wireless network first.
Happy hunting, Fred

The ipod being cheaper than an iPhone.
Um.
Um.
Posted on: 28 September 2010 by Mike Hughes
Is that it?
Actually, I think you'll find that He says that it's dearer than the iPhone. Granted that's in dollars but it's not exactly hard to find am iphone4 for around £100 and an iPod for a lot more.
So your point was... ?

Amazon has iPod for £174 while an iPhone is at least twice that.
I'm puzzled.

Unlikely Michel. There's an iOS update for the iPad later this year and the thinking is a year on from the launch, we'll see an updated iPad.
What do you you want to do with it? I have both an iPhone 4 and iPad.

Easy if you sign up for a long-term contract with bizarrely punitive early exit penalties.

Er,O2 for starters. That's before you even look at deals thar look at broadband too.
I'm nor finding an 18 month contract punitive in any sense. I have an iphone4. Why on earth would I switch. Having the 32GB guarantees it will work through a few OS uphrades yet and in Thr same way there was little reason to go from 3GS to 4 I suspect I'll have no need for the next phone.
If this is punishment then bring it on

No punishment if you stay the course. The punitive bit comes if you choose to opt out early.

Yes and my point is that barring redundancy it's a phone where the need to come out early is pretty unlikely.

Yes, there is no "need" to opt out early, but these things are fashion as much as function. I'd be interested to see the numbers on early contract renewal. Wouldn't be surprised to see this is a significant chunk of business. One of Apple's main games is making the old stuff look "broken". They're no different to anyone else in this regard. 18 months is a long time in smartphones for many.
