Hotels in Verona, IT
Posted by: SC on 28 April 2009
I'm off to Verona in a couple of weeks, on-press printing a new book....Have never stayed in central Verona before (well, not recently) as I'm normally out on an industrial estate somewhere, fancied staying in town this time perhaps....
So, just wondered if anyone had any experience or recommendations for good hotels...?
Any thoughts, much appreciated,
Cheers, Steve.

Well, was thinking a little more personable than that..!
Turning up in far more obscure places than this in the middle of the night and finding a floor to crash on isn't beyond my abilities (or job description) but I just thought I would ask the folks on here for experiences in this fine city....

Mrs JWM and I spent part of our honeymoon in Verona (ah) in a hotel just near the Roman Arena. Sadly I can't remember its name so I'm not much help.
BUT I do want to put in a plug for Verona in general, it is an absolutely fantastic place.
Even if you're only in it for the architecture, the stripy church of San Zeno is an amazing building and worth going to.
Also, if you're there when the Operas are on, you must go to one (do take a cushion, some food and water, and a jumper and waterproof, just in case). We saw Aida, and at the climax when Aida and Radames are sealed alive in their tomb, the background of lightning and rolls of thunder from a mountain storm a few miles away added marvellously to the melodrama of the plot and atmosphere of the performance.
Have fun,
James

Cheers James...Yeah, been a few times over the years, from 1st Inter-railing as a kid 20+ years ago (!) to various work trips more recently...Haven't been to central Verona for a few years though, and not stayed there in longer....
You're right, lovely place...
And, I've got my wine boots on too...!

Could'nt agree more. Mrs HHdawg and myself saw the Merry Widow (featuring a certain Andrea Bocelli), Madam Butterfly and Aida (with Jose Cura as Radames) back in 1999.
Even if not an Opera fan (like me) it makes for a wonderful night out.
The highlight for me was the cushion seller entertaining the crowd by singing (beautifully) various Arias before the show even started! Very musical these Italians.
Sorry, back to the question, as I recall our hotel was the most expensive pits I've ever stayed in, £110/night in '99 with a view of a courtyard full of washing! Keep there smalls clean though

Did you find decent hotel?

Ha ! It was fine - the printers sorted something out close to the press - a typical, intimate, family Italian hotel...Nice.
For the few hours I spent sleeping there around work, it hardly mattered...!
