Where next? 135's or higher

Any comments or views greatfully received!
As a (very) new member to this great forum, any advice on my query would help a great deal.
My system: cdx-82-180-nac05-naim fraim-black snaic.
I have had a pair of 135's on demo for about 3 weeks but am not convinced. Any ideas on my next upgrade cheer's Alan.

Hi Alan

when you had those 135s on demo, how did you power your 82? with the 180? if so, no wonder the 135s did not impress you.

i would suggest that a dedicated power supply (hicap or better supercap) for your 82 should definitely be your next step. you'll see, you'll get this recommendation from many others as well, its so obvious...

With all my haste, I forgot to mention that I have a hi-cap with the 82 and the speakers are JMLab 915

AL--

I'd put a XPS on the CDX first, or just swap to a CDS2 (or 3 depending on timing/budget). That will make a far bigger improvement than adding a larger/better power amp. Maximize the source, then go the Supercap/52/252 route.

Best,

Bob

I would go...
4. 135's or new Nap250

My system is CDS1/72/Scap/250 and while I know the 72 is the weakest link, my upgrades follows the possibilities (not theories) so it can happen that it’s the 250 that’ll leave the syste, first. That item is a 20-year-old animal, fully re-built in Salisbury for a year or so.

Given a swap+payment, I could go for old 135s or, alternatively, for a 1-year old 250 (demo piece). What do you say to it?

thank you. While I think today’s 250 is much better than mine (better than a pair of old 135s? I wonder), the most I’d like is to upgrade to a 82 or rather 52 but I think I have to wait for another type change by Naim, associated with heavy price drop.

Adding a Pair of 135's at this stage isn't going to give you much of an improvement unless you have demanding speaker.

All you will do is highlight the deficiancies in your front end.

At this stage it would be better to invest into an XPS for your CDX. The XPS really opens up the CDX and provides more control over the rest of the system.

With the new Naim range being released there is a steady flow of second hand XPS's on the market.

Once you have purchased the XPS then look toward replacing the Hi-cap with the Supercap. Then its time to replace that 180.

The 180 is a fine power amp but my only criticism is it does lack a bit of power at high volumes.

Could be a bad assumption. Or a miswired speaker. Or even a miswired 135....

Should be a piece of cake to hear the difference between correct and incorrect polarity.

In a square room, it's easy to get bad standing waves. Can you try changing the speaker or listening positions?

I can not change the position of the speaker's due to the room lay-out, it is also the main room with a tv in, so they are stuck were they are

Depends on funds, but:

1. XPS is a must
2. 2nd Hicap on the 82

If funds are better then:

1. XPS
2. Sell the 82/Hicap and get a 52/SC used

Dump the speakers, and go active! big grin

Steve, the speaker's can go to-day if only the missus would agree, they "look good" and any-how what would you change them to,assumeing I had the 82/sc
