Near, far, and across

The speakers in my room are standing on the short wall, with the equipment in between. The space is very limited so my field of play is restricted to moving the things into different distance from the wall. I found that sound quality kept changing with the distance. Near the wall the bottom octaves, farther from it the treble ones were better and cleaner. It is very difficult to find any optimum (and the optimum is dependent on the current upgrades). Does anybody have experiences on that matter?
Another embarrassing topic but not that significant is turning the black bricks into 90 degree a) to each other and b) to the wall. Once again: any observations?

FWIW,

It took 2 years to really find the optimal speaker placement in my room. With each upgrade I had to start from fresh.
From 4 inches to 4 feet, on the short wall, long wall, plasterboard wall, concrete wall TV inbetween, nothing inbetween, and so on and so on...
Every inch mattered, and with each change in position I had to re-level the spkrs. I shudder to think what the underlay of my carpet looks like.
Years later I realized my speakers were crap (Rega Jura) and so have to start all over again with a new pair. And it continues...

I'm sure most here will agree that speaker placement is the biggest b*tch in audio (other tahn paying for the stuff).

As former editor of Hi-fi Magazin you surely have many collegues with simialr attitudes?

Best,
