Ebay disappointment

Anyone bought an hi-fi stuff on Ebay to find it didn't work?

I now have - I bought a cheap pair of old Celstion speakers in 'very good condition' 'fabulous sound' etc only to plug them in and find both the tweeters don't work.

DOH!

Oh dear.
I have been quite fortunate - I purchased a Dynavector Cart BNIB last year and was well frit that this could happen, but it worked fine and the seller was very reassuring etc.

Is a new pair of tweeters expensive? Have you liased with the seller over this issue?

Not just a case of loose wiring during transit perhaps?
My main dissapointment with E-Bayers and S/H record shops for that matter is in vinyl condition classifications. On the who;e I have been pretty lucky(kiss of death I guess now).

I have liased with the seller and he has offered to send me a cheque to cover what I originally paid him for the speakers.

Very kind indeed.

So I take back all the bad thoughts I was having about him!

I've been caught out here several times with no satisfactory outcome.

These days I never buy anything unless the seller uses Paypal. This is the only sure way to get one's money back in the event of a crooked seller.

I think you ought to be a little more open-minded Gianluigi.

I've sold some hi-fi on Ebay and know for a fact that there was nothing wrong with it and in all cases the buyers got a bargain.

Many people selling on EBay are enthusiasts like us and are selling as a result of an upgrade.

Some sellers are even dealers looking to shift stock taken in part-exchange so it's not all bad....

Yes, I've sold a 42.5 & 110 on ebay and someone got a real bargain. In fact I've sold quite a few hi-fi items on ebay, and it was all very good stuff.

I think there are quite a few dealers on Ebay, their not normally that hard to spot.

After buying a 52, 01, 250, 135's on e-bay, I had one problem with dating the 250 I bought as the serial number was missing. It turned out the unit was 5 yrs older than claimed. Fortunately the seller was genuine and refunded 20% of the price, otherwise I would have been stumped. Remember it's a case of buyer beware.

I caused some ebay disappointment. Recently sold a Linn Kolektor, which was working fine for me, but was DOA upon receipt. Diagnosis was a blown FET about the size of a grain of rice; either I screwed it up unhooking the box prior to shipping, or the buyer did so when he plugged it in on his side. I offered buyback, he chose repair route, I paid the repair bill in full. Still, it took forever - can't have been a pleasant experience for him. He handled it better than I would have.

Other than that, I bought a phono pre that was listed as "New In Box"; when received, box was clearly labeled "Refurb". Works fine, but still not 100% up-and-up, IMO.

I bought a Teac V615 cassette deck off EBay today.

It works looks OK and works perfectly.

It was £5 + postage (The same as a good metal tape.)

The only problem was it was delivered to my home rather than work as I requesed, but hey ho.

If you buy from a regular name on the forum (or pink fish) I believe it adds a degree of security. Though I suppose they could always change their user name. Would they be willing to take the risk of being exposed? Dunno.
