32 or 32.5, how can one tell
Posted by: seamus88 on 23 December 2003
Hello all,
First, Happy Holidays!
Second, I am in the process of purchasing a 32/110/SNAPS combination. The question is: how can I tell whether the 32 is a 32 or 32.5?
Thanks, Seamus

It's been nearly 20 years since I've seen a 32... But if I remember correctly there will NOT be a 270 degree 5-pin output socket marked "To HiCap" on a 32. The 32.5 WILL have this in addition to the 4-pin output socket on both of them.
Basically, the .5 versions of the 32 and 42 allow the use of both outputs of the HiCap to power separate sections in the preamp (i.e. phono and signal level).

Davids right. If the socket on the far right is a five pin it's a 32.5
If it's a 4 pin it a 32

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the information. The sticker on the back of the pre-amp states 32. That said, unless there was an upgrade it is a 32. I do have "original" 32.5 boards. Can these be installed to upgrade the 32 to 32.5? Or can 72 boards be installed to upgrade?
Thanks, Seamus

No they can't.When the 32 was upgraded to the 32.5 the whole motherboard was changed.
Naim used to upgrade the 32 to a .5,but I don't think they do anymore,as they no longer have the boards available.
Paul.

Hi Paul, Thanks for the information. Rats! I now have two 32.5 (which I love) and I was hoping to add the third. I think I will go forward with the purchase.

Coincidentally enough, there's a fellow on e-bay selling a conversion kit for a 42 to 42.5... Never seen one of those outside a dealer. I think I know who this is, there was a Linn and Naim shop in Evansville, IN many years ago and I'll venture that he was involved.
This won't help your 32 situation, but I thought it was interesting to see that.
