FRAIM REVIEW
Posted by: Simon Matthews on 06 September 2001
The excellent quotes saying how fantastic the Fraim is from hifi+ have been removed as they were used without the permission of the magazine, we must respect their copyright. (ok Jason)
The mag is now out and you can read the full article for a few quid!

Who wrote that exaggerated piece of claptrap?
I have to say that when Hutter, Mana, QS Ref, etc was reviewed they all use the same words!
'you are getting a new hifi'
'rediscovering you record collection'
and similar rubbish.
I am not for one moment saying the Fraim is bad. Naim products are excellent. Indeed, I have heard a system on it and the system sounded very musical. But I find our whole hysterical stand discussions to be laughable.
The latest from the non ferrous weenie boys whete Sansui/NAit/QS ref, is better than CDX/82/180/on sound org made me laugh.
Rant over. Sorry about that Simon, nothing personal.

Can I be a reviewer in the HiFi + ?
I'll be cheap.

Yep.. That looks like about the exchange rate for a 4-tier.

Vuk,
Again, I now find myself completely agreeing with everything you have recently written. I endorse your adoration of the Listener - honest hifi articles, written without hyperbole, for honest people.
Nice photographs on the site BTW.

The Dev and Vuk: Voices of Reason Show motto "We know whats good for you" is the very essence of mulletism. I can see it really livening up the late evening MTV spot with bikini clad lovelies demonstrating Mana nut tightening techniques, cable dressing and the weekly getting your stylus cleaned spot.

Please allow me to misrepresent you further:
What you said:

The point is that, compared to a well installed QS installation, every other sounds broken to me.
What you meant:

I trust you will now leave matters in the hands of the experts at Mullet Audio.

Mullets R Us
It's a very interesting piece, and it's riddled with code. The only other stands he mentions as a comparison are the titanium Aarvik, and Hutter, in passing. It seems to me that he has taken great pains to express an honest opinion without too much contentious content. He makes no attempt to explain how it works in much detail, but he does go through the setup and tuning, including a sizeable chunk of text which, interestingly, could almost have been quoted verbatim from the Mana FAQ.
The "decoded summary" I would submit for the piece would be:
"In my experience, the Fraim is as good as a stack of Mana with the same number of shelves and levels, and is slightly easier to set up as you only have to level the base. However, it costs considerably more, since there is a much greater range of manufacturing processes and operations contributing to the end result, not to mention R & D, etc. Strongly recommended." (Can't argue, really)
Included with the review are a few pics which we haven't seen previously, to HiFi+'s usual high standard, but these are of the same old "B & W" cherry finish (always looks like 70's "nicotine paranha pine" to me)... it's high time someone photographed a maple Fraim with black spacers...
Best;

This is just the first of many reviews to come world wide, I am sure there will be plenty of pics. So far all the feedback has been excellent.
I am convinced that the Fraim will be selling well this time next year.
Most Naim owners are prepared to spend money on the systems and most of them want a rack with a high WAF. Once the Fraim gets into the dealers and customers can take a look at it first hand, it will sell. People alway buy the best, even in a recession.
The only good looking stands which work are Ash Design, Hutter and Fraim. The others may work but they look dated (very 1980's)and are ugly.
Fraim is dearer, but its tailor made for Naim kit and it does have a genuine quality look about it which will not date.
I purchased Hutter six months ago and am very pleased with it but if I had my time over again I would almost certainly have gone for the Fraim.

Excuse me for beeing vile - but I learned in another thread in this very forum, that reviewers don't publish bad opinions about equipment ...
Arye
That is true.......so they only publish reviews of equipment they like.
Also, of course, they will not review equipment they dislike.
Now what do you read into that.
Regards
Mick
If it is true that reviewers don't publish their opinion if it is a negative one, then, to my opinion, it is simply cheating.
A person can't get an opinion about a piece of equipment unless he tested it.
So if I understand you, I think you are wrong, testing the equipment by the reviewer comes before the idea if he likes or he doesn't like it.
And there is the cheating - a reviewer tests equipment, finds that it is a disapointing one, but he doesn't publish it.
Now another scene:
A manufacturer advertising in a mag for a lot of money.
Now the manufacturer comes with a new equipment.
The reviewer of the mag thinks that it is a disapointing equipment.
The time goes on and on and nothing in the mag about the new equipment, the manufacturer starts to wonder - hey, don't you want a piece of the new equipment to test it ?
What do you think happens then ?

If you've heard them and know they sound brilliant, do you really need the reassurance of a magazine review before laying down a paltry "$X" on the Fraim (or any other bit of kit, for that matter)? Trust your ears! In the mean time, if you really must pursue the comix, you can find HiFi+ here.

We at Mullet Audio are rather concerned at your apparent lack of knowledge in the area of quality audio furniture. You have chosen to dismiss the somwhat futuristic Base equipment as dated, along with the fabulous Projekt supports (which overall are surprisingly similar to Hutter in appearance). There is of course no need to explain your well-stated dislike of Mana - although I should perhaps raise for your information that there exists a school of thought that this dislike stems from the number of spikes on any given mana providing far too many attacment points for crochet'd loo paper covers. We admire your staunch refusal to allow such wanton waste of paper products to spoil the hallowed air of your listening room, and thus salute you! Mahogany will be an option on Fraim next fashion year, including contrasting "pine look" legs.
Rico - SM/Mullet Audio
I think you are after my job of self proclaimed arbitrator of good taste. But you have a lot to learn.
Bass looks.......well ordinary.
Projekt..........no longer trading I believe.

Long live the Leafs...
I do not believe this is true in all cases, very often very negative things are all said in many tests.
Its true we advertise in many of these magazines what do you really expect? This is the industry we are in, this is how we advertise our product. If you don't like it, don't buy them. Our advice has always been go to a dealer, have dem, find out for yourself how great the FRAIM is!
Sure you have to advertise in the mag, and it is clear you can quote from mags.
The existences of faults reviews (if there are)
are a problems of the mags and not of those who are advertising there.
The idea of not publishing negative tests about equipment was taken from here and was written by a reviewer of the Hi Fi+ mag.
Arye
p.s you know that I admire Naim equipment and I guess that the Fraim has the same qualities of the rest of the equipment made by Naim.

Serious question, although I'm probably showing my total ignorance of everything to do with advertising.
I'd have thought most people buying virtually any hi-fi magazine will have heard of Naim. Why don't you advertise in the likes of the magazines bundled with Sunday newspapers? Or Saturday newspapers? Slap an ad' right next to the tv section in The Sun TV guide and you'll get millions of people looking at Naim. Is this too expensive?
Using my work place as an example. Nobody has heard of Naim but they all buy Sunday papers, none of them buy a hi-fi magazine but they all have mini systems of some description. Some of these people have more CD's than I have and claim to like listening to music. You've (not you personally, the industry) got to make these type of people more aware that hi-fi can be bought at places other than Dixons and Comet.
Brian
Unashamed to know nothing about advertising.
I didn't think that the letters in F. R. A. I. M. were an acronym?
Shouldn't it be "Fraim" rather than "F.R.A.I.M."?
Sorry! Martin
