What was your favourite al*** in 2009 ?

Posted by: tpia on 18 December 2009

Doesn't have to be released this year - just one you loved playing and would recommend to all and sundry.

This one I appreciated for its great momentum, and multi-layered percussion.

... just bought it 2 weeks ago, but an instant favorite.

Tough split decision

Antony + The Johnsons: The Crying Light
Richard Hawley : Truelove's Gutter

I bought lots of really good new music this year, but these two stand out. I've really enjoyed Hawley before but Antony was new-and I then went and bought the back catalogue!

By that criterion, probably this:

Benedikt Jahnel Trio - Modular Concepts. If you like Holon, you may well enjoy this, minimalism inspired piano trio.

I don't think it's necessarily the best album I've heard all year - but I have played it a lot, and recommended to all and sundry, including you!

Well thank you - duly noted and added to the list. Tim.

This was a close second for me.

and the Benedikt Jahnel is a very good album. And I love the Holon album (Droodzilla and I went to see him live) and the Winterreise is damm fine as well.

This one's still on my wishlist Adrian. Maybe some kind soul will buy it me for Christmas.

It's a tie between Zimerman's Debussy Preludes and Hewitt's Well Tempered Clavier.

32 tracks of great R&B

This one for me.........

"Dark Eyes" and "Tarantella", as previously mentioned, would be high on the list as well.

This is easily the album that gave me most pleasure this year:

Emmy The Great - First Love

There is just something about her voice, the intelligence of the lyrics, some great melodies and some less than usual subject matters that just has me keep coming back for more. Strangely, when the CD came out, I already knew most of the songs but even that didn't seem to matter.

Also I've followed this artist since the very first MySpace demos and 7" single only releases so to actually get her first CD meant something quite special.

Steeve

Also muchly enjoyed:
Regina Spektor "Far"
Sharon van Etten "Because I Was Love"
The Unthanks "Here's The Tender Coming"
Slow Club "Yeah So"

For me both boxes have surprisingly lived up to the hype - they have to be right at the top of my 2009 list.

For me the hype lasted the week of the launch and I have not played them since. I can go years without listening to The Beatles - enjoyable when I play them but I suppose too much other stuff I would rather play.

? Confused ?
I could listen to the Beatles every day all day - only one group has met the high standard they set - and that group were nowhere near as musically inventive IMHO.

Still we all have different views - the Beatles box set was of course the best thing to happen this year in music, but there was much new music to admire too - naturally the wonderful Unthanks, as well as DLM and Trembling Bells.

I've been too busy playing all my Genesis albums Big Grin. I did like DLM as well, although have n't played it since the Ashes

By far the best disc of the year for me.

The year 2009 will always be remembered for two things: First, I was finally able to afford Naim electronics. Second, I discovered a wonderful pianist called Fred Simon. No prizes then for guessing what are some of my favourite albums are for the year 2009!

Fred Simon's:

Dream House

Remember the River

Since Forever

Greg Lyons' Smoke Signals
