Patrick, the dialogue should still come from the centre of the TV, whether you're connecting via a digital connection or an analogue one, or whether it's using a full surround system or good ol' 2-channel. When I watch TV I always have the sound going through the 2-channel system (analogue in this case, but it really makes no difference to the spatial placement). I never get the impression the voices are coming from the side unless someone is speaking from off-screen, in which case it makes sense to have that effect.

Frank,
That assumes that everyone in the room sit dead center. When watching a football match() and having a bunch of people over, anyone sitting off to the side will be hearing mostly one speaker. They will not benefit from any stereo imaging.
Sure, if i was the only person watching this might fly. But I am usually not the only person around. I live with someone, firstly, and we like to entertain. Especially for Blazer games!!!
Even in cases where the broadcast is only in 2 channels, Dolby PL does a great job of routing the dialog to the centre speaker only. This leaves the left and right to concentrate on music, sounds, effects, crowd noise, etc...
It is only my preference though, others may find simple 2 channel TV to be just fine.
