Radiohead's 'In Rainbows'

Posted by: gary yeowell on 06 April 2008

Anyone agree that this is the best thing they have ever done, better than OK Computer?

I don't seem to be able to take it out of the CD player and have to get a daily hit.... in my view simply stunning.

Yeah, it's great - probably my most played album of the last few months. Here I am about to put it on one more time...

15 Steps, Weird Fishes, House of Cards, Videotape (I could go on) are all really good. I read that Thom Yorke rates Videotape as his favourite Radiohead track.

I wasn't even a fan before I downloaded it for free - a very canny sales strategy that sure worked on me - their only album I had before then was Amnesiac. I've since bought The Bends, Kid A and In Rainbows.

I love it.

(In case you wondered, if I remember correctly, I think Vladimir Smirnoff may have had some influence on the composition of the above picture.)

Certainly 'Videotape' is gorgeous, but my personal fave has to be 'Nude', they did it live on Jonathon Ross last week and i thought it was mesmerizing.

The strange thing is that even though they did the internet distribution thing, when they released the physical CD it still sold incredibly well. On iTunes they "gave away" around 15 versions of the tracks off "In Rainbows" in video format.

As an aside, I was reading recently about some of the press complaining about the latest single being released as a "self mix" option costing in the region of £5. Some folk are never happy!

I bought the box set at that time and the second included "bonus" CD is excellent too.

Great record. Agree with everything posted. Any opinions on the audio quality of the 45rpm vinyl that came with the box-set? (I have no TT Frown)

Had an argument with a friend who has been moaning about the state of British music for years. Says there hasn't been anything in the same league as Bowie, early Roxy, Wire etc released in aeons.

Bought the miserable sod a copy of In Rainbows..

That shut him up.

I liked OK Comp at the time but have to say it hasn't aged well. Rainbows should fare better IMO

Does anyone know where I can re-download the album, as following a disk crash I have lost it Frown

Anything is better than OK computer.
How it got voted the best album of all time i will never know

I was just comparing it to 'OK Computer' as i think that was still the best thing they ever did until now.

'In Rainbows' will go down as one of my all time favourites from any band, and is in a different league to 'OK'.

I reckon the free download was a really clever marketing ploy. I downloaded it for free on the basis of - if I liked it sufficiently I'd buy it. Which I did. On vinyl. Excellent, and I also liked OK Computer for different reasons.

Does anyone else think some of "In Rainbows" sounds a bit "Blue Nile" like?

I am dreadfully slow at getting round to listening to a new album and deciding what I think of it. I've only played In Rainbows once but OK Comp I have played many many times. It was and, in my opinion, remains a superb album. No evidence of aging in my system!

Thanks for the encouragement to give the new one a good listen.

You british are waaaaaay too enthusiastic about Radiohead, In Rainbows has 3 or 4 good songs but please the rest of it is plain boring. videotape is gorgeous? please Roll Eyes Everything they ve done since Ok computer is mediocre, you people just want to be part of the hype.

Imagine Cristina Aguilera makes exactly the same album as Kid A, you would all say it is non sense crap, but Radiohead does it and then it is a master piece. This is definitely a case of emperor´s clothes.

And then they sell this megapack or whatever for 40 pounds! the sound quality is mediocre at best but british press say it is a master move and a way ahead for the future.

Please record companies save us from these "master moves"

Err no!

Has nothing to do with being part of the hype.. for your information i have not liked much of Radiohead over the years except OK Computer, a few tracks off 'Kid A' and one or two off 'The Bends'. Being a british band has nothing to do with it, if they had been Stateside i would have liked it the same.

REM in the 90's did some incredible work but now mostly dross. I call it like it is 'In Rainbows' is first class, and as for wanting to be part of the hype, i stopped doing that kind of stuff when i was 14.. (30 years ago).

You are of course entitled to your opinion on the music, but not my reason for appreciation.

I don't think In Rainbows is *that* bad, but it's not as good as OK Computer. Mind you, it's still second best to OK Computer...

...got Kid A for £2 on a second-hand market stall a couple of weeks back. Nope, even at that price, it's still unlistenable sh1te to these ears, which is what I thought when I first heard it. At least I got a cool groovy booklet....

For the record and on the whole, I like "in Rainbows", I just find annoying sometimes their desperate attempt to be different and "arty". Very 90´s.

If I was them I would keep on doing it though since they have probably sold more than they deserve for strictly musical results.

In Rainbows is an incredible album-- that and The Bends are my two favorite Radiohead albums.

Every time I have tried to listen to In Rainbows I have turned it off after a few tracks and put another CD on instead. I love OK Computer but this one has not done it for me. I will try and get through the complete CD sometime today and see if my opinion changes.

As an existing Radiohead fan, with virtually all their discs, it was a while before I started to really enjoy In Rainbows. However it has really grown on me. What is more my 13 (not previously a Radiohead fan) absolutely loves it, which as a Dad, almost make me cool.

Still waiting for my copy - ordered last week. Frown

The tracks I've heard at other's places have whet my appetite - sounds good.

In Rainbows is a very very good LP. Much better than most of the cack currently available.

OK Computer, hot on the heels of The Bends, was simply brilliant. Kid A and Amnesiac are acquired tastes so some of you folks need to try a little harder Smile

Bought my tickets today for Radiohead at UBC, Vancouver Big Grin

I had had 'In Rainbows' on my ipod for some time but just couldn't get into it. So, I spent yesterday afternoon (when I had a million and one other things to be getting on with) giving it a serious listen ie not doing anything else - not reading, at the Mac, sorting, filing, nothing. Inlay card in hand and the CD5 span.....

The smile across my face at the end told me that I had been treated to a very good album indeed. 'All I Need' needs to be heard through a serious system so you can feel the bass. The lyrics were necessary in contributing to my enjoyment (how else would you make sense of 'Reckoner' and others?).

I am familiar with the first three albums, time to move to the difficult(?) three, 'Thief', 'Kid' and 'Amnesiac' (hope they're not as difficult as Sylvian's 'Blemish'!). But I can heartily recommend 'In Rainbows'.

I haven't seen it yet (kids/work etc, you pick an excuse) but the beginning of 'There Will Be Blood' is meant to be mesmerizing in most part to the Greenwood score....

I've got it on vinyl. And a nice thick quality slab of black it is too!
Every time I listen to it, I enjoy it a little bit more. I've not really got their last couple of offerings.
Matt.
