Hi all , came home to find that my young boy messed about where he shouldn't. The actual dashboard icon has disappeared from my dock. I can't find it anywhere any ideas?
Thanx

On my iBook there is a Dashboard application in the applications folder. Just drag and drop onto the dock to create a new dock icon.

In the Applications folder - from the Finder select Go and then Applications from the menu. This will open the Applications folder and you'll find the Dashboard there - simply drag it back to the Dock and it'll be there for when you need it.

Thank you very much for your replies. I have looked in my applications but cannot see the dashboard app, there is an empty space where it must have been. Looks like someone won't be receiving his Christmas present.

Not sure if this will help, but check the trash in case he's somehow dragged it there

Click the Spotlight - the magnifying glass in the top right hand corner - enter Dashboard and press return - if it is on your computer it will find it.
You could also try a Software Update - I used to remove unwanted applications from OS X for business use and Software Update used to try to put 'em back - this may work for you.
You can restore an application from the original installation CDs too - so you can get it back.

In an IT type voice "have you switched off and on?"

Thanks all for your replies. Soon as I get home from work I will try your suggestions. Hopefully I get it back.
I did try switching off and on last night but no luck.
What I think happened is that he dragged it to trash and emptied trash, I suppose this means that the application is gone. I am hoping that when I try software update it may put it back otherwise I will investigate if I can retreive it from the original installation discs without performing a complete system install.
I can get dashboard to work with F4 so its not the end of the world - just like things to be as they should.
Don't worry I still have the Christmas spirit and Santa will still visit.

You can - look for a package (pkg) file that is called Dashboard - remember to do a software update after you have installed it. This support note How to restore your Apple software should help - good luck and merry Christmas

Sorry Howard - that won't work unfortunately - the Mac doesn't rebuild the Dock on reboot.

Go back in time and recover the app

The application is not really such its just a way of putting dashboard into the dock.
A pain but its still running, it always is, its actually part of dock services. as long as the dock is running, dashboard is running.

Still no luck. Stupidly I have not set up time machine yet which no doubt would have solved the issue. First thing I will do is look to buy a suitable back up drive maybe a time capsule depending what money I have left over from these festive days and also set up parental controls.
So, looks like I will have to re install from installation cd - thanks for the link ROTF - It looks a little challenging for me but just before I give it a go in the New Year do you think that this may work;
Go to the Apple store with my proof of purchase, installation cd's and my usb stick. Then ask very politely with many please maybe even beg if they can copy the dashboard application from one of the macs then drag and drop to my 1GB usb stick take it home then drag and drop to my applications - maybe buying the time capsule at the same time might help.
Would the procedure work?

My mother pulls the icons off the dock all the time and doesn't know where they go to. I wish there was a lock on it. Just a twitchy finger and puff.
