Q magazine 1001 best songs ever

Posted by: John3 on 20 November 2003

I bought this magazine thinking it would be interesting, but now I'm just annoyed, some of the entries are ridiculous.
U2 at number one with 'one', destiny's child at no.8 and hip-hop gets all the entries from 12 to 21. What a waste of paper!

Could you be good enough to list out the top 10 in all it's glory.... and what came in at 1001?

Oh do I have to..ok here it is:
1. U2, One (fine song but surely not the best the human race has ever produced?)
2. Aretha, say a little prayer
3. Nirvana, smells like teen spirit (I don't get why this makes every best of chart)
4. Beatles, day in the life (fair enough)
5. Elvis, in the Ghetto
6. Eminem, my name is (thought it was supposed to be songs?)
7. Radiohead, creep
8. Destiny's Child, independent woman (who? what?)
9. Oasis, live forever
10. Ike & Tina, river deep

Well, only one or two of these would make my top ten. By the way Michael Jackson is number 1001, how topical.
This is a weird list, whole chunks of it are allocated to particular genres or choices of 'stars' and experts and in no particular order. e.g. top 10 70's rock gets a slot from numbers 375 - 366. Not very logical, unless I've miseed the point.

I was wrong about 1001 then.

You've been done - go get your money back and inform trading standards or something.

Is the Magazines opinion or some sort of reader vote?

I must admit that I'm also getting a bit fed up with lists, not necessarily here on the forum, but in the music mags. I think it's just cheaper to make up a list than it is to properly research an important artist or band of the last 50 years. I really used to love mojo and uncut but recently they've got into this list thing in a big way. If it wasn't for the cover CDs I don't think I would buy them anymore.

Incidentally my all time favorite song is probably House of the Rising Sun. Anywhere on the list?. I doubt it.

And as for Elvis's In the Ghetto. Christ the man was a redneck fuckin racist. This for me was the second worst thing he ever did after American Trilogy. He did hundreds of better songs than that.

Looks to me as though they had to have an Elvis and a Beatles song in the top ten and just picked them out of a hat.

I thought "Stairway to Heaven" was supposed to always be first in these kind of lists/votes Wink

My best ever song? "Man of the World" / Fleetwood Mac. If I have to choose one.

In my honest opinion 'smells like teen spirit' is one of the best 'pop' songs ever produced.....

Beethovens 6th symphony is one of the best classical pieces ever written....

Good to have different music eh!

Have a nice day!

I'm afraid these aren't critical lists. Magazines, newspapers, radio stations, politicians are simply commercial products and reflect what their customers want to hear/read. A list from Radio 1 listeners will be drastically different from Radio 2 listeners.

If you don't like the list, then buy a different magazine.

This is one of the big advantages of "The Music Room". The recommendations generally reflect our tastes and are relatively independent of the hyping and pimping of product that the music media are prone to.

I won't call his politics or attitudes at all, I don't know what they were. But whatever they were, thry're not really relevent. Wagner was a seriously unpleasant character by all accounts I've read, but that has no reflection of the Ring Cycle's musical qualities.

Brian -

That's exactly the problem. On the one hand we tend to look at these lists because in a sense they pretend to be objective validators of our own taste. But on the other hand, if it's all so relative that there's no objectivity at all, what's the point of having the list in the first place?

Rasher siad to Chuck "Mekon's on our case" He said:
Suckers, liars get me a shovel
Some writers I know are damn devils
For them I say don't believe the hype
Yo Chuck, they must be on a pipe, right?
