Servicing

Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 08 May 2001

I have seen mention in some threads, and a number of s/h adverts, that various kit has been 'recently serviced'. This has included amps/pre-amps etc.

I see nothing in my owners manuals or on the Naim sites about this.

What should be serviced?
How often?
Why? (as amps hardly have moving parts what needs doing-is it just a clean?)
How much?
Handled by dealer-or direct to Naim?

Yours in ignorance

1. Usually pre and power amps are targetted for servicing. I think cd players can be too.
2. Every 10 years seems to be the recommendation, whether the equipment has been used or not.
3. Capacitors and resistors change their chemical and physical properties over time and usage.
4. Varies on exact needs and any upgrades reqd. A friend recently had his 62 and 250 serviced for £350, including re-capping and delivery.
5. Speak to your dealer, he will handle the transportation.
It is always advisable to contact Naim in the first instance, armed with serial numbers, to find out whether your bits need a seeing to.

If you do decide to have your kit serviced, send it direct to Naim yourself you will save a fair amount of money.

To give an example, my dealer quoted me £150.00 to have a hicap serviced. I posted it there and they posted it back....total cost £102.00.

All major couriers insure the stuff so its perfectly safe. I am even luckier as I often drive past the Naim factory, about once a month, on business so I can now drop the stuff off and then collect it.

I once purchased a 16 yr old hicap which still worked well for £150.00, I had it serviced for £102.00, so for £252.00 I now have a Hicap which is up to modern spec. Its in the black box rather than the olive green, but thats no problem to me.

The service department manned by Mark and Sheila is brilliant, good advice and service are the norm, so take advantage of it.

Mick,

I'm sure the service made a large difference to your aged HiCap, but it won't now be current spec, because the transformers are different, and do sound different.

135 tranny's were £175 each about 5 years ago (I think that included fitting).

cheers, Martin

Thanks for the comments.

I wonder why Naim do not seem to mention these facilities, and the recomendation to service items in any of the owners manuals etc?

Mick,

Depends on the dealer - so ask if there's a surcharge first.

(One of) mine charged £15 for carriage of 250,Hi-Cap & 32.5,
and nothing else on top.

Perhaps they deserve a mention - Billy Vee
