The Greatest Pop Single ever?

Posted by: Tarquin Maynard - Portly on 29 March 2010

For some time when in the car on my own, I've often played the same track 5-10 times straight off. Eventually, even I realised that I must really, really like the song.

It has a terrific tune, huge production and the lyrics really speak to me - I can identify *exactly* with the sentiment. The vocal performance conveys love, angst and real emotion and so, despite my love of The Buzzcocks, I seriously consider that All Of My Heart by ABC is one of, if not the Greatest Single Ever.

Before anyone simply dismisses it, have a listen.

Cracking Pop song from a Great Album Mike!

Not my cup of tea. The greatest pop single of all time is Walk on The Wild Side!!

Triffic song, but a *pop* song?

'All of my heart' mike ?

Soppy, wet pap imo. One of Trevor Horn's more syrupy confections perhaps. (If it was him?)

But the buzzcocks now. Oh yes.

Never thought we'd have anything in common Mr Lacey.

How about 'Ever fallen in love with...'?

A bit obvious perhaps but that's cos it's mighty good.

Or 'Harmony in my head'? My personal fave.

All of My Heart is pretty good, but you did say "Greatest POP Single Ever" right? Well then that's Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. I don't hear any other song played more often. People just don't seem to tire of hearing it. There are some great Beatle's tunes too of course, but I don't think any of them individually has the broad appeal that Billie Jean does.

Video Killed the Radio Stars, or We Built This City on R & R?

Naijeru, Billie Jean is good call too.

You Spin Round (Like A Record) by Dead or Alive must be up there?

Probably the best record by those masters of the pop single Stock, Aitken and Waterman.

(I'm always touched by your)Presence,Dear by Blondie as got to be up there IMO.

Train In Vain by The Clash has to be at the top of my list.

Hard choice to single out a single but ELO Mr Blue Sky is a 'perfect' pop song and contender IMHO.

I would agree with you BigH47 ... I'll list a few but I'll probably omit some great singles. My list would be (Not in any order of preference):

Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody
The Righteous Brothers: You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling
Marvin Gaye: I Heard It Through The Grapevine
Richard Harris: MacArthur Park
Procul Harum: A Whiter Shade Of Pale
Jimi Hendrix Experience: Purple Haze
The Animals: House Of The Rising Sun

Sorry, you have all been mislead, the greatest pop single was Seven & Seven is... by Love, without a doubt.

Impossible to give one, and this lot are only a fraction of the possibles.

With or Without You - U2
Brown Sugar - Rolling Stones
Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode
Brass in Pocket - Pretenders
Letter from America - Proclaimers
500 Miles - Proclaimers
Peaches - The Stranglers
Virginia Plain - Roxy Music

Young Rascals- Groovin

Clearly, and obviously, Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane.

But then you think about Richard Hell and the Voidoids' Kid With The Replaceable Head, or Hendrix's Voodoo Child (Slight Return).

And, in case no one's noticed, Stefani Germanotta, aka Lady GaGa, is tearing up the rulebook with songs such as Poker Face and Bad Romance, with their astonishingly accomplished videos.

Always had softspots for...

Love - Alone Again Or
The Lemon Pipers - Green Tambourine
The Small Faces - All or Nothing
Robert Wyatt - I'm A Believer

Well it should be Supper's Ready but they couldn't fit it on seven inch.

I think I'm with Dean on this one. Probably. Although Bohemian Rhapsody is certainly a contender.

Dean...

Good call. Blondie also sprang to mind ("Dreaming", "Sunday Girl", "Fade Away and Radiate") as did Kylie's "Can't Get You Out of My Head", Sugababes "Freak Like Me", Beyonce ("Halo", "Crazy in Love"), Michael Jackson ("Don't Stop til you get Enough"), Chic ("Good Times"). Really, there are too many to list, and it's impossible to pick a favourite.

The faces, Stay with me, surely the greatest single ever

What about Eton Rifles or Going Underground by The Jam? I'm still standing by Elton John or even better Don't Go Breaking My Heart by Elton & Kiki Dee.
And no-one has mentioned the Birdie Song yet.
