The Greatest Pop Single ever?
Posted by: Tarquin Maynard - Portly on 29 March 2010
For some time when in the car on my own, I've often played the same track 5-10 times straight off. Eventually, even I realised that I must really, really like the song.
It has a terrific tune, huge production and the lyrics really speak to me - I can identify *exactly* with the sentiment. The vocal performance conveys love, angst and real emotion and so, despite my love of The Buzzcocks, I seriously consider that All Of My Heart by ABC is one of, if not the Greatest Single Ever.
Before anyone simply dismisses it, have a listen.

If the Birdies songs in then Sugar Sugar by the non existent(as a group) Archies.
Man call yourself a music lover, more like a music philistine.

Sorry to be a bore, but is that an oxymoron? And no I haven't spent the day watching Countdown! Anyway, I have bad news. It is UB40, Red Red Wine.

You're all wrong, it's "The Name of The Game". Can't believe no-one's even mentioned Abba yet, 29 posts into a "best pop single ever" thread.

I think some of your poor, deluded fools thought I was seeking your opinion.
I was not, and I am not.

Yes Mike, but you were so wide of the mark with your choice it was untrue - still each to his own. Do you really like ABC or was it just a wind-up? But when people suggest New Order then I know they are having a laugh - surely Blue Monday is one of those records that makes every sane man grapple for the mute button.
The Greatest Pop Single ever was, without any shadow of doubt, Louie Louie by the Kingsmen - if you don't agree: I don't care - Frank Zappa said it was and that's good enough for me.

Debate is pointless. Sniper doesn't just have an opinion on this, he:
a) knows what the greatest popsong ever is,
b) knows what we think it is,
c) knows that we're wrong.
It's all in his book (apparently).

Rather like the live albums thread containing a surfeit of albums that never actually saw an audience this thread contains a significant number of songs that were never actually singles at all. Doh!
Be My Baby - The Ronettes. Three bass drum thums and you know what it is. Now shut up!

Don't be a bore. Not wanted, not needed.
ROTF - I should have added "NOWAH" - I think the single is phenomenal.
Blue Monday is a dance track, a belter but not really pop.

Louie Louie was definitely released as a single on the Jerden label in 1963 and re-issued on Wand, the Kingsmen's more usual label, with an alternative b-side later that year. The re-issue was a big hit single with a bullet.

The problem is my suggestions are ALWAYS the correct ones, so one should always wait for me to post, comprende?

If they are always correct, they would be statements rather than suggestions.
Verstanden?

Blue Monday gets my vote. Factor in the (almost) unbelievable story of how they lost money on every copy sold but didn't think it was a problem....until it became the biggest selling 12" of all time. Adds to the legend, somehow.
A record that is absolutely guaranteed to get me on a dancefloor.

Mike the statement was arrogant enough without me ramming it home.

It's either Substitute by The Who, My Perfect Cousin by the Undertones, or Dancing Queen by Abba.

Sorry, buddy. I saw some of the suggestions here and assumed this thread had pretty much degenerated to farce. "We Built This City"? Best pop-song of all time?
And the esteemed Mr Sniper can defend himself. I'll stop now.

Despite my liking for all things Grace Slick even I don't agree with your choice, Winky.quote:Originally posted by winkyincanada:

What is being allowed as pop? To me Strawberry Fields isn't, but Penny Lane is.

Now I'm confused. I was challenging its inclusion, not supporting it. I find it one of he most execrable pieces of garbage I've ever heard. It's down there with "Promised You a Miracle", and pretty much everything Phil Collins ever did

I'd agree with that. Revolution #9 probably isn't, either.
