The Greatest Pop Single ever?
Posted by: Tarquin Maynard - Portly on 29 March 2010
For some time when in the car on my own, I've often played the same track 5-10 times straight off. Eventually, even I realised that I must really, really like the song.
It has a terrific tune, huge production and the lyrics really speak to me - I can identify *exactly* with the sentiment. The vocal performance conveys love, angst and real emotion and so, despite my love of The Buzzcocks, I seriously consider that All Of My Heart by ABC is one of, if not the Greatest Single Ever.
Before anyone simply dismisses it, have a listen.

Surely surely surely it has to be
"I close my eyes and count to ten " by Dusty Springfield. There can't be any other possible choice - except maybe Some of your loving or Son of a Preacher Man, also by Dusty.

Amazed at some of the suggestions for a perfect pop song.... not even pop FFS.
A perfect pop song should be short (the golden age of pop most songs were about 2 1/2 mins long), punchy , have an amazing hook and absolultely MAKE you sing along.
There have been many, but frankly very few in the past 20 years.
My suggestions
1) Paperback Writer, from the vocal intro to the jangly guitar and rumbling bass, an absolute classic that always raises a smile.
2) There She Goes, The La's. More of the same.
BTW, my name is Colin, and yes, I am from Liverpool

Impeccable taste sir - some would say the first punk rock single as well

My suggestions:
- Waiting fot the man - Velvet Underground
- Love will tear us apart - Joy Division
- Jumpin' Jack Flash / Child of the Moon - Rolling Stones
- O Superman - Laurie Anderson
- Saeta / Vegas - Nico
- Strange Fruit - Robert Wyatt
Very sixties and seventies this lot, I'm afraid. Makes one feel very old.
I'd like to add 'Victoria', by the Fall of course, not the Kinks version and maybe Dead End Street (by the Kinks of course, who else

I agree that perfect pop should be short , but rules were made to be broken. I think the desire to hear a track again is the defining magical characteristics we all seek. Don't repeat the riff too much is one solution, keep it short is another, or have variety within the song - all ways of making you want more. I have been told I like depressing songs so my list may not be that great, but I will list a few and we will just have to see if those folks are right.
Perfect pop for me has to have an emotional punch, even if that is just the desire to bounce around like a teenager or to visit a emotional moment - but with a really catchy riff attached.......hmmmm -I talk a load of quap me thinks.
Last train to clarksville - the Minkies
Down in Splendour - Straitjacket Fits
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urZKvcLzUQg
Fools gold - stone roses
Only a matter of time - Railroad gin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2G9UUIgCQqQ
"Bohemian like you" or "get off" - Dandy Warhols
Blister in the sun " Violent femmes
Planet Claire, 6060842, or even Rock Lobster by B52s
Know your product The Saints

Its all pop cos its "catchy as" to my ears. I agree with blue monday also, although the band themselves say it is not actually a song as such.
I also remember slightly homophobic mate of mine loved the 12 inch version of this song back in the 80s. I loved the irony and could never get the song out of my head.

I've not read all this thread but I'll bet you're all wrong
Everyone knows that it's a tie between The Small Faces "All Or Nothing" and The Easybeats "Friday On My Mind".
Thats this topic closed then!
