The Greatest Pop Single ever?
Posted by: Tarquin Maynard - Portly on 29 March 2010
For some time when in the car on my own, I've often played the same track 5-10 times straight off. Eventually, even I realised that I must really, really like the song.
It has a terrific tune, huge production and the lyrics really speak to me - I can identify *exactly* with the sentiment. The vocal performance conveys love, angst and real emotion and so, despite my love of The Buzzcocks, I seriously consider that All Of My Heart by ABC is one of, if not the Greatest Single Ever.
Before anyone simply dismisses it, have a listen.

Surely one of the most over-rated pieces of third rate tosh ever committed to vinyl. Crap playing, crap singing and a nothing song.

Were you never an angst ridden, hormone infused teenager then?

Sham 69, 999, Buzzcocks, Lurkers, The Members; oh, yes. Saw The Clash on Boxing Day 1977 or 78 for 50p, in the Acklam Hall.

Why is it necessary to pollute a fun thread like this with BS like this. Please educate those of us who love this song. Where have we all gone wrong?

Hey it's his point of view, I kind of agree.
In '78 I was 31,I was divorced what relevance did this record have for me absolutely none, did I think it well played well sung and poignant lyrics no way, just an average pop song, just happened to be "bigged up" by a famous DJ.

I'm not sure about "All Of My Heart" by ABC as the greatest pop single ever, although I have often championed "The Lexicon Of Love" as one of the greatest pop albums.
In my time I would say it would be something by either Abba or Michael Jackson, although there are so many good tunes to choose from with these two.

Paper Plane,
I've no issue whatsoever with you not liking the song. That's entirely your prerogative. I just think that in an affable, harmless, fun thread like this it's unnecessary to come over as bitter as this.

If you were a gaga 12/13 yr old it was blissful rock 'n' roll of the hormone releasing kind.
Bloody fab. Still brings a tingle to my groin!
If, er.... that's not sharing too much. ahem.
Time for my coat.

Some mighty fine stuff here.
I'm thinking of making a double album compilation from the best ones, but I don't know where to download the one's I don't have in decent quality.

Excerpt from a Teenage Opera Keith West
Count the days into years
His eighty two brings many fears
Yesterday's laughter turned to tears
His arms and legs don't feel so strong
His heart is weak, there's something wrong
Opens windows in despair, tries to breathe in some fresh air
His conscience cries: "get on your feet
Without you, Jack, the town can't eat"
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Go into town, don't let them down, oh no no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Go into town, don't let them down, oh no no
The people that live in the town don't understand
He's never been known to miss his round
"It's ten-o'clock", the housewives yell
"When Jack turns up we'll give him hell"
Husbands moan at breakfast tables
No milk, no eggs, no marmalade labels
Mothers send their children out
To Jack's house to scream and shout
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Come into town, don't let us down, oh no no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Come into town, don't let us down, oh no no
It's Sunday morning bright and clear
Lovely flowers decorate a marvellous square
People cry and walk away and think about the fateful day
Now they wish they'd given Jack more affection and respect
The little children dressed in black
Don't know what happened to old Jack
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no no ...
Just to let Dusty know he's not that old!
