Where do you keep your music?

How far apart are your 'soft' and 'hard' wares?
My music system is in the family/living room. I keep my music in the basement. I have there 600 LPs and 740 CDs on shelves along separate walls. I usually bring upstairs 5-10 albums that stay on the coffee table till they are played a few times before being taken back downstairs.
I keep up to five CDs in the car. I spend an hour driving daily, so they last me for a week.
My wife who is an English teacher in high school keeps at her school at least half a dozen of my CDs. She plays my music in her 'Humanity' classes every time she can make a connection of the music with the period, the topic or the artist that they are studying. She manages to crack a lot of the cases too.
I used to have two friends with whom I exchanged music, but now I do it with only one. So I always have two or three CDs that are on a loan for a couple of months.
I guess that is it.
Regards,
Haim

Close to my heart.
Physically, in purpose-built shelving next to my "desk" (actually my dining-room table - which is where my iBook resides), next to my bookshelves; this location is five steps away from the CD5X.
Hey, I've never noticed that my dining area has mutated into a library of sorts; as a bachelor, I tend to feed my face around the microwave and the (all-important) coffee machine. With only 600 sq. ft. of living space, one makes adjustments according to priority.

My music is only 6 metres from the main system at the other end of the room in some ex-book shop shelving that fills the end wall.
Second system, in other sitting room has a limited number of vinyl and cd's there, as does kitchen system (cd only).
Car 1 (wife's) has 10 cd changer, car 2 (mine) uses iPod when on the go so choice is pretty big.
All systems have adaptors to plug in iPod for shuffle function when I am too busy to change i.e. when cooking.
iPods are brilliant for for portability and shuffle function, but serious listening always done with originals. One of your recommendations on now in fact Haim.

Nic

The living room, where the main system resides, on a purpose built wall unit spreading to the floor, the coffee tables, the TV table, the lid of the LP12 if no discs spinning and a small CD rack by the Fraim. I begin to see why SWMBO thinks I may be a little untidy. Then there are those discs on my bedside table, under the table and the bed. Next key location is my study at home, a CD shelf and various hard drives and a couple of iPods. The basement for some older vinyl that currently can't find a home upstairs. In the car. In my office at work are CDs and another hard drive.
Rings on his fingers, bells on his toes, Huw shall have music wherever he goes
Huw
P.S. There are also some discs at my folks and one old girlfriend has a collection of old vinyl that I would love to have back, regrettably they're probably in pieces now.

Since I moved into a rented flat, there are CDs on most of the flat surfaces, especially windowsills! They are of course highly translucent, which I hadn't thought about when they were all racked in my former home.
Worst part is trying to put my hands on a particular album! As a result, I am selecting music at random, which is reintroducing me to some old friends that I had almost forgotten!

Everywhere in the house, lounge, dining room, kitchen, all 3 bedrooms, in the car and on the iPod Mini.
Not because I have so much its just the way of things.
Also very close to the place I am at any given time.

In the Ikea CD racks in the dining room. In the record cupboards in the dining room. And CDs under the said record cupboards. I keep Current Cd's on the window sill by the Hifi. Current Lps on the floor by the Hifi. Less current but still current CDs in a wooden cabinet by the HiFi. Lesser, less current but still current CDs in a storage unit accross the room from the Hifi. In the Cd racks in the study. On the shelf above my desk in the study that I put up for PC software. In the Cd racks in the garage for all the CD singles. In the boxes in the attic for all vinyl singles and last clearout. In the cupboard by my bed and on the shelves on my missus' side of the bed for late night... In the car. In the other car. By my CD player in office at work. In my coat pocket. On the covers of Mojo and Uncut. Oh and I've just noticed I've about 30 sitting on the desk next to me as I type this. And my wife thinks I need to be more organised. Told her to get on with the ironing.

Inviting friends over does the reintroduction thing for me.
All my CDs are stacked into piles on the floor about 3m from where I play them. Cds to the right, listening sofa in the middle and overdraft to the left

I have a heavy wood coffee table about 6 foot long between my speakers, the drawer has two lines, front is classical back is R&R. Roughly alphabetized. Right cubby hole has favs that get played often. and current ones sit atop my speaker next to my system. LPs are in my bedroom in a heavy bookcase I got for free from a friend who wanted the garage space. 13 inch shelves are perfect fit for them. R&R in middle shelf is alphabetized with cards between them, I'm quite proud of that effort. Classical above are not in order and I'm not really clear on what I have, but there is an end spot where I keep favs. Boxed sets are on the right.
I organized them because I was tired of the mess on the table top and not being able to find favorites. Tho I do pull out a few LPs and CDs and keep them handy near the players till I get tired of the mess or want to rotate some. I'm at the point of no more in my collection till I get rid of equal amount. but I live alone and don't have to worry about what someone else thinks.

hi all,
this thread gives me the perfect chance to ask you all if you would be so kind as to post some links to sites selling cd racks/storage.
my collection has outgrown bookshelf type design
and really needs to be replaced.
am even thinking of asking a carpenter friend to make me one.
