Is this worth doing ?

My system rack is nothing special. Its just a simple Sonus systems 5 tier rack with glass shelving.

The sound of my system on this rack is actually quite good, but it can be a little bit sharp now and again with some CD's.

Not being in the position to buy something like a Fraim or quadrspire (because I am saving up for a CD5 and Linn Katans) Wink I am thinking of replacing the glass sheving with some MDF ones.

Any ideas what this would do for the sound ?. I dont want to replace my current rack because its quite new, and I would rather try and get it sounding better first.

Micromega stage 1, NAC92/FlatCap/NAP90.3, Linn Helix/Kustone, NACA5

Try turning the glass round you might have the 'trebly' side.

I take it the rack is made of steel?

If so; that will explain your comment quoted above. Try your kit on anything non-ferrous (coffee table etc) and see what happens.

'Isoblue' is a nice, cost effective alternative if you can't afford Fraim/Hutter etc:

Yes the rack is made of steel, my system used to sit on an old coffee table, and to be honest it was a little bit smoother in its presentation of the music. But the bass was much slower and there was less detail.

If the rack was old I would have no hesitation in selling it, but I would like to do all I can to make it a bit better.

Like I said in my above post I will be buying a new CD player and speakers soon, so maybe that will help smooth things out a bit.

I really really want a CDX and from a financial point of view its not a problem, but I feel plonking it on my current rack could have some problems. Thats why I think a CD5 would be better in that regard.

Do metal racks with glass shelving affect the Naim amplifiers and *caps* or is it mainly the CD player ?.

Would a good isolation plattform help out a CDX on my glass shelf ?

£110 per level I think?

It's the steel that's the problem apparently.

Naim use non-ferrous cases to get away from the deleterious effects of steel. The physics of it, is over my head but; 'Faraday Cage' rings a bell.

Anyone care to expand on that?

I became frustrated with my kit on steel racks and initially used a home made wooden structure. Wood does indeed smooth out the sound. To bring back some precision, there has to be rigid mounting and a degree of decoupling/isolation.

In your position (knowing what I know now) I'd spend my money on a decent support.

I now use Fraim and think it's worth what it costs.

Good luck.

Some Isoblue questions for those in the know...

I notice the photo of yours J.N. it's directly on carpet. How's it coupled the floor?

Isn't that a bit low to have your stuff on it? Looks no higher than 40-50cm.

What would you do if you had a suspended wooden floor?

What about a turntable. Does anyone have their turntable on Isoblue?

Thx Jay

Anything special about Isoblue's construction (apart from the obvious) that contributes to its sound?

...always liked the looks of this support,

Jay,

the bottom level has spikes.

All other levels just have the wooden wedge resting in the slot of the level below.

cheers, Martin

The Isoblue is very nice indeed. But to be honest I like the look of the Quadraspire more. There are a few Quadraspire stands for sale on the internet for about £200/£250. Now thats got me interested Smile.

But more importantly I need to bin off my Micromega stage 1, its on its last legs, and sonicaly its doing the rest of my system no favours at all.

So after I have got my CDX and Katans, I think a S/H Quadraspire could be a purchase. I assume a CDX will have no problems on one of those. Big Grin

Or maybe I will get the Quadraspire first Smile. Hmmmmmm.....my Sonus rack will be demoted upstairs to the spare room, and my wife can put her Sony on it. Smile
