What music would you play at your funeral?
Posted by: seagull on 01 September 2002
Conversation last night veered strangely as it often does. This topic came up after discussions about an evening course you can book on Embalming (and Advanced Embalming!).
We have recently been to funerals where they have played ...
1) Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life
2) The theme from Inspector Morse
Most of my musical taste could be described as funereal anyway so I guess I'd go for Atmosphere by Joy Division (laugh a minute that one! )

by Richard Shindell, from 'Somewhere Near Patterson'
It was written by Dar Williams.
Chilling, simple and atmospheric.

I'd expect nothing less than a vintage wake with dancing for days. I've never been able to understand why people expect a funeral to be all doom and gloom when it should be about celebrating a life.
I've got a bunch of party CDRs which should get the ball rolling, but I'd expect all of my mates to be there and each to do a DJ spot.
At recent parties I've played:
Brooklyn Funk Essentials
Psychedelic Furs
Little Feat
Barrio Jazz Gang
Beats & Pieces Vol.2 (wicked compilation)
New Jazz Hustlers
Stray Cats
Get the idea?
RIP Jim

Kirsty MaColl 'Days', it certainly raised a lump in my throat after she died.
Prefab Sprout 'Faron Young'. No idea why actually.

The choir music being played when Mr Bean falls from the sky. It's very beautiful and very funeralesque and at the same time, when people figures out what it is, they will smile and say "That old bugger". I hope.
By the way, anyone knows what the Mr Bean music is?

I would have either 'Round Midnight' or 'Ruby my Dear' by Thelonious Monk and 'Isifan' by Billy Strayhyorn.

"Brokedown Palace" would be on most Deadheads list. What say you Nick?
"Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell, listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul.
Going home, going home, by the waters edge I will lay my head, and listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul"

Unless you get your sound system installed in the Crem for the day any music you play is going to sound rather flat and dull.
A neat trick would be to get the explosion at the end of "Run Like Hell" to go off at the same time as the heart pacemaker explodes in the cremator

Nick you are right, it is a bit maudlin. I had thought of making everyone I know sit through the whole of Dark Star - never been able to get most of them to do that so far ;-)
Sympathy for the Devil might be a good choice, and it would be great to have the minister announce the Dead Kennedy's "Too Drunk to Fuck".
The opportunity to make them listen, at a time when I don't have to, to Black Lace "Agga Doo do do..", is too good to miss.
"All systems are perfectly designed to get the results they get."

Hi all:
Cozy Powell: Dance With The Devil.
Or is that asking for trouble?
Best Regards,
Mark Dunnn

Jez you really hate people don't you.
If you're completely sociopathic I would suggest the entire output of Black Lace - there was one of those retrospective programmes recently featuring dances that really shouldn't have caught on, I was surprised how many of them Black Lace were responsible for (Agadoo, Superman etc).

I've thought about this very topic for quite a while
The first two tracks from "Monk's Music": - the short "Abide With Me" horn piece, followed by the absurd juxtaposition of "Well You Needn't". Oh to see their faces!

What music would I play?
I'd be decomposing. Sorry, couldn't help it.
But I'd like to have "On The Silent Wings of Freedom" from Yes' Tormato album played...
And maybe some selections from Jon Anderson's Olias of Sunhillow.

I thought "de rust van een kist" by Jaap Fischer would do de trick.
For those who don't know dutch it is about the peace and kalm of the inside of a coffin.
