J*** fusion info please

Met a girl at a gig tonight, and, like you do, we started on music. Now I listen to jazz fusion of the 70's era - Mahavishnu, Return to Forever etc, but she likes "modern Jazz Fusion with beats/hip hop". It was very loud, so I didn't get more specific info - but - great fountain of all knowledge - what is this genre?? Like who?
Ok, so next time I see her I want to look like I know what she's on about and appear hip, but I am genuinely interested.

Uh-oh. Never mind the jazz fusion - what's the missus going to say?

Rasher,
BTW, did you ever heard something from Eumir Deodato (Prelude album especially)? That's my the best fusion album ever.

Davie -
now what am I supposed to say "met a
person last night"?
I suppose if she was a 25 stone bloke I may not have been chatting him u...I mean talking with him, but there you go..
So...any ideas?

i suspect she may have been talking about the kind of housey jazz fusion stuff that giles peterson has a tendency to inflict upon his listeners.
or maybe things like attica blues.
both of which i detest.

Maybe stuff like the Bad Brothers album by Ronny Jordan and DJ Krush, or the the stuff on Thirsty Ear, like Matthew Shipp vs Antipop Consortium.

I've heard Nils Petter Molvaear described as "Trip-Hop Fusion", his best Album is Khmer. Well worth a purchase.

God - it sounds awful.
UUrrmm...yes, thanks Dozy. I've been in enough trouble in recent years. That's why I'm recently into Hi-Fi! I thought it was safer.

BLT's recommendatipn of Khmer is thoroughly seconded, it's a superb album. For something a bit closer to "normal" fusion but with Beats, maybe try Ronny Jordan's "The Antidote". There's also world/beat fusion, like Afro Celt Sound System and Martyn Bennet, which is rather good IMHO.
Pete.
