New U2

Posted by: The Fat Cat on 18 February 2009

Right now the first songs of the new album leaking through the internet (check youtube).

To describe what I heard so far I need one word: Magnificent!
Posted on: 18 February 2009 by Bruce Woodhouse
No, I'm not falling for that.

I bought some of the last few U2 albums on release because the hype was 'the best thing they have done for years'. They all went to Ebay.

I've nothing against U2 specifically but it all went downhill after 'New Years Day' for me; and yet I still must have bought 6 or 7 of their albums!

I like the new single, its a bit different, fresh yet also accomplished.
The issue with U2 is that they come with a lot of (bono) baggage & to my ears the sound quality of their recordings are usually dire. They put on a good live show, but like bruce, after a few plays, their albums are either sold or very seldom played.

U2's next direction to be free-form jazz odyssey?
Posted on: 19 February 2009 by TomK
I'm afraid I couldn't stand anything they did after The Joshua Tree.

The new single is diabolical

The NEW single sounds like something left over from the Zooropa Album

I don't like the "Bono baggage" too much either. However, the heart of this group (and the musical genius behind U2) has always been Dave Evans "The Edge". He is my favourite guitar player (beside Stuart Adamson); and he is the main reason I have been and always will be a U2 fan.

Bruce, think this time the hype is slightly different. U2 has not claimed this record is "the best thing they done for years" and that's for me a good sign.

So far I heard the first single "Get on your boots", which I do not like that much and two other songs which were available for some hours last night on youtube until they have been removed for copyright reasons.

First song was "Magnificient". This is a real U2 song, simply the best of U2 with a killer riff from the Edge.

Second song was "Moment of Surrender". For me this song is soo good I'm just speechless.

I will try to get the album on CD the minute after it is released.

Sorry, I know most of you here are Pink Floyd fans and belonging to what I call the "seventies music generation". I'm an eighties child.

I'm an 80's child own loads of the Floyd, plenty of House & Techno from the 80's mixed in with The Mode, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees & tons of the Purple One but NO U2 so I don't get your point Razz.

My humble opinion is that the last good album by U2 is "Achtung baby".
After that i got "Zooropa" but sold it the very next week.
Maybe pride.
But in the name of love.

well I was born late 53, I"m still trying to get over the Beatles.

Artists all have such a short time to hit their mark, crest then ride it down to average maturity, that is if they make it that far.

Most new bands to me aren't half as engaging or inventive. And what's with these weak voiced singer songwriters who can't do either? A year ago driving home at 10pm there was a pitiful song of a guy whining about his lost love affair strumming a guitar. Then Lennon's Julia came on, then they put on Dylan's Lay Lady Lay, it was no contest. I'm old school and proud of it.

I wanted to like new u2 album ,but i can't.I used to be a really great fan. NO LINE ON THE HORIZON is lack of good tunes , i don't know how to describe - there is too much and nothing at the same time. At the moment the title should be "Wants again we don't know were we are going"

The vinyl pressing of the album is of superb quality, and fantastically presented.

I really like the music, too, it has echoes of the freshness of Achtung Baby at the time, and somehow sounds like they enjoyed themselves a lot. I do think you need to listen to it several times, though, which is often a good sign for future longevity.

I had a listen to the album on Spotify and via headphones the tracks sounded good. The CD arrived yesterday and we appear to have the same problem with this album as with How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb - the album has clearly been mixed for the iPod/radio audience and there is just too much bottom end so making it almost unlistenable on a full range system. Disappointing.

I agree.

White As Snow and Cedars Of Lebanon sound great, but Breathe sounds compressed!

This is my first 2 cents on a naim blog...Went to music store to buy some tunes and guess what?? The new U2 was playing. Found some good blues albums, went to the cash and felt so sorry for the employee that has to listen to this U2 watermarked to the s**tbox for the next 2 months repeatedly till there becomes holes visible through the CD not to mention the employees eardrums from the terrible recording this band has come to enjoy so no one can steal it from a friend....I think U2 and The Rolling Stones are in competition for the worst recording award...Keep it up boys, as long as Bono can continue to buy an extra pair of glasses from the sales he is happy...

So, on balance then, you don't care for it greatly?

On first listen, I rather like it.

I heard a live interview with them yesterday on 100.3 in LA. the woman interviewer was really asking some philosophical questions about their latest and the guys were just a bit stymied, but had fun making a few jokes then trying to be serious about the process of trying to do something a new way with Eno and Lanois. She also played the songs they talked about. But TCM channel had a rare old movie starting so I skipped the last 15 minutes.
