Becoming a dad...

Posted by: reubs1981 on 08 November 2009

Hi all,
Been registered here a long timme, but I usually only post in the Music Room - I haven't got a Naim system, in fact, because in the next week I expect to be a dad, I've barely got any system at all. A B+W Zeppelin, iPod Classic and plenty of rips are my listening pleasure.

Anyway, I know there is a least one recent new dad on this forum, so I thought I'd blow my own trumpet and tell you about my blog

http://expectant-dad.blogspot.com/

Pleae feel free to read it if you have a few minutes and maybe fill me in on the joys to come my way - and please contribute to the birthing playlist!

So your mrs is approx six days over now, what`s happening
Confused

She's now 7 days over, and her cervix isn't open yet (sorry if that's too much info!), the midwife is coming back on Sunday to see if she's any further along, and if not she'll be induced next Thursday (two weeks over).

The poor thing was so disappointed and upset - she's adamant that she doesn't want to give birth in the hospital and wants her home water birth - I just feel so helpless/powerless. I imagined being next to useless during labour, but didn't realise things would be out of my hands so soon!

Oh well, what will be, will be!

Hang in there Reubs. We ended up 14 days over, then went into labour on the day they were planning on inducing the missus. You can only play the cards as they fall I reckon.

Don't worry about how much dilation, my misses was just over half way dilated , nurse says not long now, nurse comes back on duty 12 hours later. Still here? Still half way, 7 hours later it's resolved.
Just hang in there , he/she will be here when they decide.

Thanks for the support guys - we're going through the wringer at the moment, but it's going to be worth it!

I hope you will still be saying that in say 3 or 4 years, maybe even after 4 or 5 weeks. Smile

Some of the 'alternate' methods for chemical inducement are:

- exercise (tread mill, walking)
- tweaking breasts/nipples
and
- sex
(seriously)

Our pre-natal class teacher told us that just because dilation may have stopped at a certain size, effacing is/may still be occurring, that is the thinning of the cervix ready for a baby to emerge. So you are still making progress, but slowly.

There are also a few things which slow down labour, laying down, having a bath, epidural ...

I woke up this morning in a cold sweat.

I've been pretty frazzled lately after being out of work for six-months, money's running out and the thought of having a screaming baby in 8 weeks time ...

Good luck mate...problems won't go away, but the wee one will put them in perspective.

Munch, from your posts I thought you were an old man, but you must be younger than me :-)

Oh no, he is an old man , just not as old as some (i.e. me). Winker Roll Eyes

My youngest 2 are very similar ages to Stu's boy and girl, but reversed, I do have a 42 YO as well.

2 months of fatherhood here and it's been great.

I don't understand the perceived need for library-like silence surrounding babies. If our experience is at all representative, they can get used to (almost) anything.

We’re still running active SBLs. The lad was welcomed home to Kruder and Dorfmeister at realistic volume, he has Radio 3 on constantly during the day and the usual mix of Jazz and other stuff at night. He takes it all in his stride.

He did hear two Ring Cycles in utero, so perhaps this helped!

What a super baby and sleep suit!

OK, at 15.41 on Wednesday 25 November, baby boy Roman Singh was born by emergency C-section, weighing a very healthy 8 pounds and 8 ounces. Mum and baby doing well.

As you can appreciate, we're both shattered, and I'm at the hospital as much as possible with them both, but I wanted to let everyone know, and to say thanks for all the support and advice.

He's smashing - a little star.
