Led Zep, WTF?
Posted by: garyi on 14 June 2003
OK, Led Zep seem to have kicked off on many a forum of late.
In true irwin style I have 'done watford' today and come away with some nice stuffs.
SRV Live double album. nice.
LA Woman, the doors. (do you know I have never liked the doors, but this piece of vinyl appeared for £2, I couldn't say no, and its great!)
And Led Zeppelin In through the out door
I have just put it on, so have no idea what I have let myself in for.
So what have I let myself in for?
Thankyou.

Come on chaps you cannot be serious.
If you like rock music generally then I can't believe you dont at least find something worthwhile in Zepplin.
Ok you can argue that some things are better, and some of it is rubbish but:
I, II, III, IV and Physical Graffiti are essential Rock albums (IMO), I can't belive any rock fan hasn't got at least a couple of these.
And what's this with the Lyrics critisism?, OK so you could have a go at Dylan, or Billy Bragg say for crap lyrics (and there's plenty of rubbish there as well as some great stuff) but since when have Lyrics been part of what Zepplin were about. Who else would we dismiss with this argument? Elvis anyone?

Quote: Zappa, too, wrote some fine rock music, as did a number of other rock musicians.
Todd, if there was ever a more prentious rock musician than Zappa, I can't think of one. There is nothing less pretentious than Led Zep. It is what it is, nothing more, nothing less. What it is is extraordinarily good. I am 40, and by your reasoning, I should have "grown out" of them by now. But as I get older, I appreciate just how good they were. And they were. 'Nuff said?

Hey, you can listen to what you want, but to claim that there is nothing less pretentious than Led Zeppelin? Please.

Wow. 40 posts (and counting) on the subject... it looks to me as if some folks like Led Zeppelin, while others appear to not like Led Zeppelin. Who knew?

errrr, Did I miss something ?
As for led Zep, I can remember listining to Led Zep II in a record demo booth with 4 schoolmates at Abels Music shop, market square, Northampton when it had just come out.
I so much wanted to be cool that I pretended it was great and even bought it.
Nowadays, I actually really do like Led Zeppelin and it's taken listening to Physical Graffitti occasionally over the last 10 years to really get them. I listened to III the other day and for the first time thought it was ALL great.
I've bought HTWWW, but have not listened to all of it. The band do appear to be tighter than any other recorded Zep that I've heard.
