CD3.5 "rubbing" noises

Posted by: Nick Case on 21 September 2003

I am wondering whether this forum has any experience of a short "rub" noise that my CD3.5 has taken to make.

It occurs when a disc is inserted and begins to spin-up. The noise "vvvrrt!" is short (less than .3 sec) and is accompanied by an "Err" on the display.

This used to happen with a certain few discs and I attributed it to the disc being warped or otherwise out of tolerance. Offending discs would normally play if track 2 is selected first.

The problem is however occuring more frequently now. I see two, not necessarily disparate, causes;

1. My young son's regular rampage through the lower shelves of my CD collection is affecting the discs.

2. The transport on the 3.5 needs attention.

Would appreciate hearing of any similar experiences and any solutions involved.

Havea look at this thread:

It is about similar issues with CDX2 but the dirve drawer etc are the same design.

Thanks Goeff

There are two issues raised, firstly the rather satisfying (IMO) 'clunk' that is clearly the magnetic contacts grabbing the drawer as it slid closed. The clunk characteristics will change with the speed at which the drawer is closed. This noise is one of the tactile features that endear me to the player.

The 'vvrrt' noise is I believe related to disc vibration at spin-up. Some discs no matter how carefully the puck is centered still vibrate sufficiently to create this noise. As you correctly point out the disc depression on the drawer is a close fit with only about 1mm of clearance.

It does therefore seem most likely that clumsy handling and poor discs are the cause.

Nick I get the same on mine, don't know what it is but sometimes I have to open and close the door a few times to get it spinning correctly. Guess this doesn't help you, except to say you are not alone!

Mine started when I started using the CDI Blue Statmat and I guess the player isn't set up to cope with it fully. Sounds better though...

Its just the puck, rotate the rubbers and try again.

Jamie don't be silly, stat mats, bits of plastic you mean!

It works mate!!!!!

The fat one balances the two skinny ones...

Gary is more than probably right, it is a common problem with Naim pucks. Just rotate and/or pinch the little rubber rings back into shape and it'll probably run without a problem for several months.

I put a piece of paper on the tray (cut out like an 'O' = hole in the middle). Works a treat.

Have fun!

My 3.5 does this aswell.
I leave my puck upside down to let the rubbers on the puck go back to normall after being compressed.
Also i would imagine greasy young fingers placed on top of your discs would not help the rubber to stick to the cd's, perhaps a bit of cd cleaner on them would help, i don't know if cd cleaner would damage the rubbers on the puck, i suppose you could try washing up liquid there.

Personally I wouldn't get CD cleaner or washing up liquid anywhere near the puck or the CD drawer, if the puck gets that bad just replace it with a new one for about a tenner.

I would'nt put cd cleaner or washing up liquid anywhere near the cd drawer either!

I suppose i better explain in more detail for anyone who does'nt understand.

Make up some soapy water with a small amount of washing up liquid, get a cotton bud, dip it in the soapy water and gently rub on the rubbers on the puck, making sure you are a safe distance from anything electrical and also make sure it has dryed thoroughly before putting it back in the cd player.

If the rubbers are not greasy just spin them around.

Why pay £10 if you don't have to.

Thanks for the idiots guide Matt, but frankly I still wouldn't do it!

Absolutely - I've had the same puck on my CD5 for over two years and it still works fine.

It's not difficult to rotate the rubbers every few months if you find it isn't gripping, or do what a colleague does - have two pucks and rotate their use so one has an opportunity to recover.

Thanks All

I've had a word with the better half and we are going for the Uranus Moon Puck!

How we actually fit a 77km radius stellar onject in the tray of a 3.5 is still a mystery however.
