5.1 issues with Sky HD

Posted by: iiyama on 10 June 2006

Since Wednesday i've been experiencing difficulties with the sound via the Sky HD channels. For some reason the vocals are now coming out of the rear surround speakers as well as the centre channel. However when watching non-HD channels the 5.1 is fine.

The amp settings are set to auto and when in HD the digital light comes on, so the amp is receiving the signal via the optical cable. Like I say the 5.1 was working fine until Wednesday it just suddenly stopped working properly.

The amp is a Denon 2806, Sky HD box, via Optical cable

Thanks for any help in advance!

So, with the same Sky HD box (and therefore the same audio input on your amplifier) the sound is normal on SD channels and wrong on HD channels? How weird.

I would suggest a fault with your Sky box, unless others have been experiencing the same fault, in which case it's obviously a fault with Sky themselves.

It now seems the BBC HD world cup broadcast is ok, preview not! Sky Sports and Skyone HD ok, it reaaly seems its the Discovery HD and
National Geographic HD are the ones with the worst audio problems. Im confused!

If it helps, the BBC HD World Cup coverage is not being broadcast in DD 5.1 but previews are. So it looks like your problem is still confined to 5.1 broadcasts, irrespective of channel.

If the Sky HD develpoment is anything like Sky+ was you are in for a rocky ride. Sky are very reluctant to admit to any problems yet shortly after there will be a software update. Find a forum like Digital Spy for latest problems and keep pestering customer services.

the world cup via bbc hd is also only stereo on the tv drive, but like you say the previews are 5.1

My BBC HD previews are definitely decoding as 5.1. As soon as the World Cup came on it went to stereo, and changed to the Pro-Logic setting on my processor.

iiyama, you havn't been playing around with those preposterous DSP modes like 'Stadium' and Jazz Club' have you? They tend to have the kind of disasterous results you describe.

No! i haven't cahnhed anything other than input to auto! Like i said it was all working fine a few days ago! I will turn the box off overnight and see if that helps!

My G/F has just informed me that my 12 month old son managed to turn the amp on and 'did things with ths buttons and dials'Armed with this info i have put the settings back, and yes Alan, those settings had been changed and would appear to have caused the problem! Thanks to you all!
