Noisy Sky + boxes
Posted by: jcs_smith on 12 April 2006
The hard disk on my Sky + box is very noisy. It has sound levels about the same as the cooling fans on my 135s. Obviously it's not a problem if the tv or hi-fi is on, but it's irritating when I don't want to play anything. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do about it, other than switching it off?

Mine's the same, I've relocated into a draw that I can close so I can't hear the thing.

Just wait until the Sky-HD box is released.
i) It is made by Thompson - who make (arguably)the loudest Sky+ boxes; and
ii) The Sky-HD box has TWO fans to keep the thing cool

My freeview box was Thompson, lasted all of 15 months of infrequent use so the Sky HD should be good then.

Change the drive for a Samsung Spinpoint 160 and tht's the last you'll hear of it.
There are good instructions how to on google - Takes 5 min but you do lose all your stored progs naturally but you gain recording hours

Or, put it on some vibrapods. Improves picture and sound and reduces fan noise slightly.
