Phono boards in 52 & Lingo Mk2

Posted by: blueoyster on 28 March 2003

I`ve just purchased a Linto phono stage and was considering removing the boards from the 52, I have seen a couple of recent posts suggesting that it might be a good idea. Also I recently heard the Lingo Mk2 and found it more dynamic & faster sounding than my present Mk1. I have just had an Ekos & Dynavector XX2 fitted which is obviously a vast improvement over the Ittock/Ortofon MC30 but the system still sounds sluggish, is the MK1 Lingo the culprit?

Blueoyster,

Can I just be sure that you are feeding the Linto output via a line-level (2V) input on the 52 and you are wondering whether removing the phono boards in an adjacent input would improve the sound?

If so, just try it. Removing the outer sleeve of the 52 is simple, and pulling the phonoboards out is also simple. If you can't hear any difference, just plug the boards back in. Suggest you do all the changing with the kit switched off.......

If you are feeding the Linto output via the 52's own phono boards, then transfer the Linto output to a vacant line-level input on the 52. It should sound a whole lot better.

If you think the Linto might be at fault, first try listening via the Linto and a line-level input, then by-pass the Linto and listen secondly via the phono board input. The Linto/line-level should win hands down. If it doesn't, try a different line-level input. If that also sounds duff, begin to suspect your Linto (or all the line-level inputs on the 52)

Hope this helps

Cheers
